Policy-Tuition Waiver for Supervising Teachers and Resource Teachers for Teacher Interns
Western Kentucky University supports public school teachers working with student teachers and teacher interns through the adoption of the following policy relevant to SB77, Section 9.
  • In recognition of valuable service to the preparation of teachers and the need for all teachers to have continual professional growth, a supervising teacher or a resource teacher for teacher interns may, with prior approval of the course offering institution, take a maximum of six (6) credit hours per term at any public postsecondary institution and pay no tuition. The postsecondary institution shall waive the tuition up to a maximum of six credit hours. The teacher covered in this section may exercise the tuition-free course option, only if there is available space within a given course offering. A postsecondary institution shall not be required to establish a course to meet teacher requests. The tuition-free courses may be used to partially satisfy requirements for an advanced degree.
  • The following conditions must be met for the tuition waiver to be effective.

Teach Kentucky is a unique alumni sponsored teacher recruitment program. Teach Kentucky is designed to attract high achieving and highly motivated recent college graduates to teach in Kentucky public schools. The participants are drawn from elite national institutions. Currently, Teach Kentucky is recruiting from Duke, Centre, Harvard, Vanderbilt and Yale Universities. Teach Kentucky is sponsored by alumni from Duke, Harvard, Vanderbilt and Yale Universities. The sponsoring alumni have forged a novel alliance with Jefferson and Shelby County Public School Districts. Candidates may apply for teaching positions in high need academic areas with one or both schools districts. The two districts offer dramatically different student populations and teaching opportunities: a large urban system (Jefferson County) and a small semi-rural system (Shelby County - 30 minutes from Louisville). In addition, Teach Kentucky has streamlined the application and admissions process at the University of Louisville's Department of Education. Each participant will be enrolled in an "alternative route" to Kentucky teacher certification program and earn a Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree. The two-year degree program includes the core requirements for Kentucky's teacher certification and the national recognized Kentucky Teachers Intern Program (KTIP).
