http://www.africaonline.co.ke/AfricaOnline/kenya/chapter12.html
THE CULTURAL BACKGROUND The culture of a country is expressed through its people: by the way they live and die, by the values which influence their behaviour, by what they eat and how they prepare it, by how they entertain and amuse each other, by what they dress in and how they make it, by the houses they live in and how they build them and with what materials, by the language they speak and how they speak it, by their art, their music, their writing and, not least, by what makes them laugh and cry. A people's culture is that way of living that makes them different from other people. It is usually most openly and vigorously expressed in song and dance, in mime and drama, and in painting and sculpture. But it is also there in people's thoughts and their ways of thinking, in their religious beliefs and their moral standards. People who live in towns develop a different culture from people who live in the countryside, even though they themselves originate from the rural areas. It is the young that are the cultural innovators while the old preserve and maintain the cultural traditions. Kenya's culture, therefore, is as fascinatingly diverse as the many peoples of which our nation is composed. Paradoxically that very diversity gives our culture a strength and interest that other countries lack. One only has to attend a Kenyan national celebration, such as Madaraka Day (I June) or Jamhuri Day (12 December), to appreciate the tremendous vitality and variety within our culture. The traditional dances are deeply rooted in the past, though often modified, too, by the present. Those performing give great pleasure to the onlookers and even greater satisfaction to themselves. They arc so clearly expressing their own integrity and uniqueness as people together with their links to the past and their hopes for the future. There is nothing false or artificial about their movements or the words they sing.

This is a project founded in 1969 by the Association of the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) which train and employs physically challenged persons in handicraft production and related business skills. Within the Whitesands, there is a cultural village representing four tribal communities drawn from different parts of Kenya namely, the Maasai from the Southwestern part of Kenya, the Giriama from the Coastal region, the Bukusu from the Western Region and the Orma from the North Eastern side of Kenya. In the cultural village, one will find life size traditional houses built using the materials the particular communities represented used. These were built by members of the Bombolulu Workshop Project and make a good learning area for the tourists to know more about Kenya's traditional heritage. During the high season, there is a blind guide who sits at the Village and gives a talk about culture to the guests as they have their afternoon tea. This is a good way of promoting our rich Kenyan culture and heritage.

In fact, Kenya exports more tea than Sri Lanka, India, and China! Chai is Swahili for tea and also is used in reference to a bribe. Tea time in Kenya is a British colonial holdover.  Time for tea is worked in to the school schedule.  Kenyan culture is interesting because, like the United States, it tends to be an embracing of many different cultures. Tea time is borrowed from the British, but the style of tea is borrowed from India. It's called 'chai'.  Chai is tea with milk and sugar in Kenya.  Asian chai also has spices like cinnamon, cardamom, or ginger in it.  Other names for chai are spiced tea, spiced milk tea, milk tea, or even tea latte. Chai is served at breakfast, morning break, after lunch, afternoon tea, after dinner.  It is the beverage choice of Kenya it would seem. I was fortunate enough to be invited to one of my student's homes.  Not only was there a ton of food that I was supposed to eat, but the chai flowed and flowed. The mug I was given to drink from was the size of a small stein holding approximately two times the chai of a regular mug.  So as not to appear rude I drank around six of these mugs of chai.  Good thing I like chai that was the equivalent of 12 regular sized mugs and boy did I have to pee later on!

enya's long history is reflected today in its cultural diversity. Different tribes, habits, languages, religions, ... In this section you will find the basic coordinates of Kenya's cultural map.
Population
Kenya's population agglomerates tribes, cultures, religions and languages. According to what we know today, the country's human map was started 6,000 years ago, when the native inhabitants of this land were first invaded by the northern Nilotic and Cushite peoples. Then came the Bantus, followed by the Arabs, Asians, Europeans... The skin colours of the Kenyans cover all the range of clears and darks. The nearly 30 million Kenyans are distributed in a very uneven way throughout the country, given that the north and northeast regions are arid and little hospitable for human settling. In this regions, population density hardly reaches 2 inhabitants per sq km, whereas in the rich and fertile western the rate rises to 120 inhabitants per sq km. In the Rift Valley, denisty varies among areas, with an average around 13 inhabitants per sq km. Most of the Kenyans dwell in the Highlands, where the climate is mild. Urban population is nearly 25% of the total and is concentrated in a few large cities, mainly in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumu. The rural population is confined to the fertile areas and lives on agriculture. Only 4 million people work, including small farmers and nomad shepherds. Women account for 30% of the total active population.

General info Population and culture: Religions
Religions
The great world's religions coexist in Kenya with the native beliefs. This cohabitation not only shows up within communities or villages, but even in a single person. The individual spirituality is sometimes a blend of elements from different cults, in a way that any of the religions adopts a unique character in Kenya. Other consequence of this is the difficulty to establish percentages for each of the religions, reason why different sources are usually not unanimous. For the statisticians' terror, adding the rates for each religion often results in more than 100%. Christian religion was brought by European missionaries that started settling in the country during the 19th century. Conversion works were developed in parallel with health and education, resulting in the fact that christian religion expanded in a similar extent to schools and medical care. Due to the English influence, christian Kenyans are mostly protestant, between 30 and 40% of the population, whereas 20-30% of Kenyans are catholic. In addition there are other minority groups, such as adventists, quakers and Jehova's witnesses. Christian beliefs are sometimes complemented with traditional rites, giving birth to liturgies that may seem a bit heterodox from the western world's point of view. Currently, the christian Churches keep a solid presence in Kenya's public life. President Moi himself is a christian and regularly fulfils his religious duties, but the Church-State relationship is double faced: the government has always avoided frontal clashes with the Church, but the independent and accusatory attitude of the priests leads in occasions to a latent tension that results in the prohibition of certain religious publications. On the other hand, missions are strongly rooted in the life of rural communities. It is truly meaningful that, in many villages, the most solid and apparent building is a church belonging to any of the christian branches.

Kenya Coast Handbook. Culture, Resources and Development in the East African Littoral. Jan Hoorweg Dick Foeken and R.A. Obudho (eds)
Hamburg: Lit Verlag, 2000.
ISBN 3-8258-3937-0.
The Kenya Coast poses a development enigma in more than one way. Historically it was part of the Indian Ocean world and its economy. With the coming of colonial rule and later nationhood, the political and economic allegiances inevitably changed. Economic and political power shifted to the centre of Kenya.
The coastal region is not richly endowed in natural resources but it has economic lynchpins in the port of Mombasa which serves Kenya and other East African countries, the tourism industry which has great potential and which flourished in previous decades but has recently shown a steep decline, and agriculture which so far serves mainly as a means of subsistence for large parts of the local population. Despite this potential the region finds itself in a marginal position.
This book traces the causes behind this situation and analyses it from different angles - political, economical and social. Authors from very different disciplines review resources, economy, people and history as well as the development potential and existing development limitations. The latter consist not only of infrastructural and human constraints but also of fragile coastal ecosystems, such as coral reefs, beaches and mangrove forests, that easily suffer from environmental degradation.
This handbook, with a preface by Ali A. Mazrui, is an indispensable tool for anyone with a professional interest in the East African Coast. The book contains 26 chapters divided over 6 sections: Introduction, General background, People and history, Economic resources, Human resources, and Development issues. The book also contains a large bibliography and statistical information.

Choose a Topic for Your Essay
Topic is Assigned Topic is Not Assigned
Topic Has Been Assigned
You may have no choice as to your topic. If this is the case, you still may not be ready to jump to the next step. Think about the type of paper you are expected to produce. Should it be a general overview, or a specific analysis of the topic? If it should be an overview, then you are probably ready to move to the next step. If it should be a specific analysis, make sure your topic is fairly specific. If it is too general, you must choose a narrower subtopic to discuss. For example, the topic "KENYA" is a general one. If your objective is to write an overview, this topic is suitable. If your objective is to write a specific analysis, this topic is too general. You must narrow it to something like "Politics in Kenya" or "Kenya's Culture." Once you have determined that your topic will be suitable, you can move on. Go on to the next step. Return to the essay home page.
Topic Has Not Been Assigned
If you have not been assigned a topic, then the whole world lies before you. Sometimes that seems to make the task of starting even more intimidating. Actually, this means that you are free to choose a topic of interest to you, which will often make your essay a stronger one.
