Mount Koh There are many languages spoken in Kenya. Kiswahili is the proper language but is only spoken on the coast. The rest of Kenya uses "kitchen Swahili" which is a very basic language with no use of past or future tenses. While Kiswahili is the national language, English is the official language. Other languages spoken are Gikuyu, Kikamba, dholuo, Kiluhya, Kalenjin and many more, each of which have several dialects. The climate of Kenya varies from the tropical to the temperate. This is due to the fact that Kenya is divided into two almost equal parts by the equator. Kenya's tropical climate is moderated by altitude, which ranges from sea level to 5199m. at the snow peaked Mount Kenya. The climate is pleasant and generally agreeable. There is plenty of sunshine all year round. Rainfall is heavy around April and May . The coast of Kenya is humid, the average annual temperature ranges from about 76 F in June and July to about 82F in March and April. The highlands are relatively temperate and the Lake Victoria region is tropical. Kenya's main natural resource is its land. Only 11 percent of the land is suitable of agriculture. About one-third of that total is used to grow crops; the remainder is used for grazing. The northern two-thirds of Kenya is mostly desert or semidesert.
