Historical Setting
[General Background] The history of Kenya as a political entity began with the region's inclusion in the British sphere of influence in the late nineteenth century and the subsequent establishment of a British protectorate and colony there. The British brought together the country's diverse elements under a unified administration and bestowed on it the name Kenya after the 5,200-meter peak in the central highlands that the Kikuyu called kere nyaga, the "mountain of whiteness." Improvement in the lot of the average African was limited until after World War II when political movements, like that among the Kikuyu led by Jomo Kenyatta, demanded a role for the black majority in Kenya's government. The determination of the European community to retain exclusive control in a "White Man's Country" and the continued denial of African rights set off a violent reaction during the Mau Mau emergency in the 1950s. The Kikuyu-led insurrection was suppressed, and the lengthy imprisonment of Kenyatta and other African leaders suspected of complicity in it caused a hiatus in organized African political activity until 1960, when the campaign for majority rule within the framework of the colonial regime succeeded in submerging ethnic differences among Africans and in winning the recognition of British authorities.

Kenya Time and Date Kenya History Back to Top In 1886 and 1890 Britain reached agreements with Germany that delineated a boundary between British territory in Kenya and German territory in Tanganyika (part of present-day Tanzania) to the south. The Imperial British East Africa Company was chartered in 1888 to administer Kenya, but the company soon found itself losing large amounts of money through its vain attempts to extend control over the interior. In 1895 the British government formally took over the territory, which was renamed the East Africa Protectorate. Its western neighbor was Britain’s Uganda Protectorate, and the border between the two lay just west of the site that would become, in the late 1890s, the new city of Nairobi.

History: Excavations in Kenya suggest that the region is the cradle of humanity, the home some 3.25 million years ago of Homo habilis
By 1720 they had been driven out by the Arabs, and for the next two centuries the region was largely ruled by Omani Dynasties from Arabia. During the 1820s, a local power struggle led to the British being invited into the region by the Mazrui Dynasty, and by the middle of the century both the British and the Germans were competing for control of the coast and its hinterland during the second great colonial period. By the 1890s the threat of the Masai tribesmen had, by a mixture of diplomacy and war, largely been neutralised, and the British were able to penetrate into the highlands. The Mombasa to Uganda railway line was constructed at this time, and Nairobi owes its present importance to the fact that it was a convenient staging point on the edge of the highlands. It soon became the headquarters of the British administration.
By the early 20th century, the fertile lands to the north were attracting a large number of white settlers led by Lord Delamere who came into conflict with the local population. Many tribes, such as the Masai and the Kikuyu, were displaced. The movement for territorial, economic and political rights soon found an able leader in Jomo Kenyatta, who spent much of the 1930s and 1940s in Europe pressing the case for his cause. After World War II, this gathered pace. The fight for independence was a difficult and sometimes bloody affair, particularly the three-year guerrilla war mounted during the 1950s by the nationalist Land Freedom Army (better known as the Mau Mau) against the British colonial authorities.

The first noted history of Kenya was in 2000 BC when nomadic tribes arrived from Ethiopia. After 1000 BC, the rest of the ancestors of the many surviving Kenyan tribes followed. Early history was focused on settlements along the coastline, which for centuries had trading relations with Southern Arabia and peoples up and down the coast. The Berlin Conference of 1885, when the European powers first partitioned East Africa into spheres of influence, marked the official opening of the "scramble for Africa" and the formal launch of Kenya's colonial experience. In 1895, the British government established the East African Protectorate and, soon after, opened the fertile highlands to white settlers. The settlers were allowed a voice in government even before it was officially made a UK colony in 1920, but Africans were prohibited from direct political participation until 1944. After World War II, a rising tide of nationalists' claims began to gain strength and resonance behind the leadership of Jomo Kenyatta and the organising force of the Kenya Africa Union. With the death of Kenyatta in 1978, Daniel Arap Moi became President.

    Some History
The diversity of tribes and languages in Kenya is clear evidence that throughout the centuries many people have passed through or settled in its lands. While this migration and settlement was going on within the interior Muslim traders were visiting the coast from as early as the 8 CE. These traders came mainly from the Arabian peninsula and from Persia (Iran). Their aim was to trade and settle rather than colonise. They would trade cloth, wheat, glassware in return for ivory, tortoise shells and rhino horn. As this trade extended evidence shows that even the Chinese visited Kenyas shores. Some inter-marriage occured between the Africans and Arabs resulting in Islamic influenced towns along the east coast. Life was generally peaceful.... The Spanish were occupied with colonising the Americas while the Portuguese were determined to break the Ottoman Empires hold on trade with the Far East. The Portuguese raped the East Coast in what was to become common practise among the ruthless European imperialists for the next 4 centuries. Colonial life, as expected, was harsh for the inhabitants. The beginning of the end for the Portuguese came in 1698 when Fort Jesus fell to the Arabs. Luckily for the Kenyans the Portuguese left for good in 1720. The Arabs remained in control of the East Coast until the arrival of the next set of ruthless imperialists, the Germans and the British in the late 19th Century. Constant quarrelling between the Arabs in East Africa led to the Sultan of Oman sending forces to the Kenyan coast to subdue them. In reply the ruling Mazruis Clan asked the British for help. The British flag was raised over Fort Jesus for the next three years. After this time rule was handed back to Said.

Kenya shares with it's East African neighbors Ethiopia and Tanzania the distinction of being the cradle of humanity. The coastal peoples were for centuries in contact with the Arabs and the Persians who came by sea to trade. The Swahili culture common to much of East Africa was developed. The contacts brought about the creation of cities on the Indian Ocean coastline. Kenya was a British colony and protectorate from the 1890's until independence in December 1963. The country's first president, Jomo Kenyatta, transformed Kenya into a de facto single-party state as leader of the Kenya African National Union (KANU). KANU established and maintained political dominance. In December 1991, opposition political parties were legalized. In December 1992, multi-party elections were held with four presidential candidates Geography
