Overview
Fairfax Kids Cooking is a Food and Nutrition Services/Chef Partnership. It is designed to introduce students to healthy snacks and Give me 5!, our national award winning nutrition education promotion to help students learn the importance of eating five fruits and vegetables every day. Students are introduced to a variety of new fruits and vegetables, which make healthy, easy to prepare snacks.
Families are a child's primary educational resource. However, with the increase of one-parent families, families with two working parents, and the variety of easy-to-prepare convenience foods, children are assuming more responsibility for their own food choices. Although people may not completely believe the phrase "You are what you eat," good nutrition does have a significant impact on how well and how long people live. Poor nutrition may promote the onset of diseases, such as certain cancers, heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes.
Research clearly indicates that students perform better in school when their parents or other significant adults know about and support their studies. Fairfax Kids Cooking attempts to involve households through interesting at-home activities and by sharing current nutrition information with parents during these nutrition education activities. Parents, teachers, and the school food service professionals need to ensure that children are developing good food habits by teaching nutrition and encouraging behavior that will form the foundation of healthy eating habits for a lifetime.

Our mission is to educate and assist the family in understanding proper nutrition and to be the voice of the American Culinary Federation in its fight against Childhood hunger. A Culinary Education Program for Children Teach Kids about Cooking, Nutrition, and the Foods of Many Cultures! "Cooking Is For Kids"
Helps Kids And Chefs Children Learn the Importance of a Good Breakfast
Charles Mattocks Jr., CEC, president of ACF Pee Dee Chapter, took Cooking is for Kids to students at Carolina Academy in Florence, S.C., in October. Chef Mattocks taught a lesson on the importance of breakfast, in which the children learned about basic nutrition, how to make smart food choices, and how to choose healthful foods. Posters, food, and playtime were included to make eating healthy a fun activity, and the children made "Pink Pussy Cats" out of yogurt, strawberries, raisins, grapes, nuts, and honey. One student, when asked about eating healthy food, said, "I love it, I love it, I love it!" a sentiment shared by his classmates.
Teaching the Fun of Cooking
Congratulations
to the following chefs who have taken time from their busy schedules to complete the Cooking is for Kids educational program. Due to their efforts, ACFCCF will receive a $500.00 donation in their names from MasterFoodServices. These chefs, who had a wonderful experience with the children, also earned 15 hours of continuing education credits, which can be used for initial certification at any level or certification renewal at their present level. Thank you all for a job well done!

Dads and Kids Cookin Together
For many parents, "kids in the kitchen" conjures up images of children wielding sharp knives and a sticky mess from floor to ceiling, but it doesn't have to be that way. Putting your kids to work helping with family meals can be safe, clean, and fun for everyone.
We've listed some fun recipes that you and your children can make together. The two most important things to remember are, to be safe and for all of you to have fun preparing and eatting the food you make.
Things you'll find in this section: Kitchen Tools For Kids
  • Pizza wheel : great for chopping ham, cutting up fruit, slicing peppers (skin side down so the blade doesn't slip), cutting sandwiches in half Styrofoam trays (from vegetables): use as a disposable cutting tray under the pizza wheel. The texture of the tray keeps the blade of the wheel from slipping around, the edges of the tray contain the mess Egg slicer: slicing eggs, bananas, kiwi, strawberries, and chunks of cooked vegetables

KIDS COOKING: A Very Slightly Messy Manual
by the editors of Klutz, Inc.
This may well be the most fun kids' cookbook you've ever seen. It contains 45 "savory samples of kid-do-able kitchen crafts & cuisine," and is well-organized into sections for easy reference:
  • Breakfasts
  • Desserts
  • Not to Eat (Playdough, Face Paint, Finger Paints, Giant Soap Bubbles, and Fido's Fabulous People Crackers)
Each recipe is fully illustrated in color. Instructions picture every ingredient and tool (i.e. small bowl, mixing spoon, spatula, etc.) needed to complete a recipe. Easy-to-follow, with playful cartoon illustrations of animalsan ideal combination for young cooks. "Home-Baked Fish Sticks," for example, shows a hungry cat wearing a bib and sporting a knife and fork. He looks a little impatient as he waits for his meal.
Recipes have catchy names, like"Darrell's Forget-the-Cookies-Just-Give-Me-That-Batter Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe" and "Not-so-Sloppy Joes." It's not your mother's cookbook, but it's doubtful she's ever had this much fun in the kitchen, either.

Cooking Louisiana kids cooking. Kids in the Kitchen. There are manyWeb Sites out there that are dedicated to cooking for kids.
http://www.cookinglouisiana.com/Cooking/kids-cooking.htm
C o o k ... a - Kids Cooking K ids in the Kitchen Kids can cook and of course care and supervision on the parent’s part is extremely important. When is the right age? Well, you have to decide that, but when a child is 10 to 12 years old (in my opinion), or, tall enough to work near the stove (without a having to stand on something) they can start helping you. Ask them to stir cold mixtures such as cake and cookie batters. Start out with making them feel as though they have contributed to the meal and praise them when the part they are involved with is being eaten. Make a big deal about it! The small things at the beginning will encourage them to do more, hey, we all love praise. You’ll know they’re interested when they come back and ask you to help again. As age permits teach them about the simple things. For instance, the dangers of boiling water, sharp knives, hot oil, etc. You should do this while teaching them how to make a dish, or, at least participate in completing it. Boiling eggs for a potato salad is a good example. Show them how to start them, time them, cool them and peel them. Let them do each of the steps but watch them closely so they don’t hurt themselves. Repeat the safety rules occasionally and they’ll remember them. Teach them how to cook biscuits, or even scrambled eggs. You must eventually trust them after you are confident that they understand the hazards of a stove, oven, or, other danger points of cooking. A good test is to ask them to start something and stand back and watch them. If they fail the safety test stop them and go over the rules again, keep working with them. Be sure to tell them that they only cook when YOU are with them, otherwise, it’s OFF LIMITS!
