    B.C.'s record:
Does success end after Grade 3?
A big change for the better happened in education in 1998. Teachers, negotiating with the provincial government, made a crucial sacrifice. They agreed to two years of frozen salaries, and a third year with only a two-per-cent increase. But that agreement came with a condition. The money the government saved had to go to reducing class sizes in Kindergarten to Grade 3. It wasn't an easy move for teachers. It meant their paycheques would slip even further behind inflation. But B.C. teachers knew just how important smaller class sizes are to student success. But nothing's changed after Grade 3. A student entering Grade 4 this fall could be going from a class with 22 students to a class with 30 or more. It's a lot harder to learn in big classes. Teachers can't give students the individual attention they need, and the classroom atmosphere loses focus. Go back to the top

These are just a few of the images that Delaware children chose to draw for submission to Word Dance magazine. Word Dance published drawings from sixteen Delaware students in the spring issue, which also included writing from two local students. Word Dance is a non-profit literary magazine for and by students in kindergarten through grade eight. This magazine, located in New Castle, Delaware, encourages children to express themselves through artwork and creative writing. The artwork, printed in a sea green color, adds a touch of spring to the publication. Drawings of surfers, animals, and kites allow us to see how children perceive spring. Most of the children illustrated stories and poems that appeared in Word Dance. Emily Wagner, age 10, of John R. Downes Elementary School, illustrated a story for Word Dance magazine. When asked how she felt about being published she said, "I was happy and proud everyone was seeing my drawings. I like how the pictures match the stories. I am a really shy person, but if I wasn't, I would want to show the whole world." Delaware children who had their artwork published in the spring issue are: Valerie Cianfaro, Grade 2, and Daniel Jones and Michael Dee, Grade 3, of Lombardy Elementary School; Chris Huskey, Jordan Bea Wills, Scott Cercena, and Rachel Thomas, Grade 5, of Frederick Douglass Intermediate School; Emma Wisniewski-Barker, Grade 4, of Patnall School; Mia LaRue, Paul Hogge, and Richie Garchitorena, Grade 5, and Maggie Morrison, Grade 3, of Calvin R. McCullough Elementary School; Rachel Wexler, Grade 3, and Emily Wagner, Grade 4, of John R. Downes Elementary School; Ben Binder-Macleod, Grade 7, of Shue-Medill Middle School; and Lauren Lawless, Grade 8, of Ursuline Academy.

Erin's Grade 3 year would have begun in September if she were enrolled in school. She's never been to school, though, so when "Grade 3" starts, if ever, is anyone's guess. She's the quintessential unschooler, dabbling or immersing herself in what she is driven to learn, supremely self-directed and self-motivated, though not always, by any stretch, according to the pace, scope or sequence schools use.
Recently Erin performed at the really big theatre in Nelson. What a great experience! In terms of "schoolish pursuits", Erin now has a few workbooks on the go. She wrapped up the last of her Miquon Math program over the summer and has continued with Singapore Math in fits and starts. She's now comfortable with multi-digit multiplication and long division and has moved quickly from Singapore 3A to 4A in the past couple of months, and is showing no sign of slowing down. She's also working with integers and polynomials in the "Alge-Tiles" algebra program. She's made grade strides in printing and cursive handwriting in the past six months using the Getty-Dubay Italic workbook series. She does some music theory workbook stuff from time to time, and a bit of musicology work to accompany her piano workbook. We've also delved a bit into some systematic world history using Susan Wise-Bauer's "Story of the World" as a basis, and the Kingfisher Encyclopedia of history, various other reference books, projects and historical fiction to augment our readings.
