EARTH LINKS
Celebrate summer with nature and ecology Web sites
by Jenny Factor

(from Summer 2001)
Ahh, summer. Streams, mountains, beaches, and days outside call to the young and the young-at-heart. And now the Web is a part of these seasonal activities with a slew of Earth-related games, facts, and eco-adventures designed to appeal to kids of all ages. EARTH GAMES Kids take our planet seriously. But that's no reason they shouldn't play while learning more about ecology, waste control, and recycling. With The Lorax's Save the Trees Game , preschoolers can interact with their favorite wood sprite any time they want while learning more about saving forest ecosystems. Older children will dig the Dumptown Game . This smart, appealing Shockwave introduction to waste management lets your child become Dumptown's newest city manager. First, you can design a new environmental program, and then watch while this messy community cleans up. ECO-ADVENTURE For appealing interactive storytelling, visit

Several web sites do the work for you. They make it easy to e-mail or fax letters to government or corporation officials giving your support for or against a bill or action. Usually, you fill in a line or two to identify yourself, sign the pre-written letter, and hit SEND. Here are some sites:
    Click to save tapirs
This is not a tapir-specific site, but your click-thru on the Oriente Fund Web Site will help preserve tapir habitat in Amazonian Peru and Ecuador. Race for the Rainforest Click once per day on the button, and a certain number of square feet of rainforest is saved. (After you click, you will see the amount on the screen.) This is not on the Nature Conservancy's site, but they coordinate the land protection. I phoned the Nature Conservancy to make sure this was legitimate and that it works. It is and it does. And it's easy. Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) As of June 14, 2000, the top listing was tapir habitat in Belize.
