that I am supposed to know.
I don't know what it is I don't know,
and yet am supposed to know,
and I feel I look stupid
if I seem both not to know it
and not know what it is I don't know. Therefore I pretend I know it.
This is nerve-racking
since I don't know what I must pretend to know.
Therefore I pretend to know everything. I feel you know what I am supposed to know
but you can't tell me what it is because you don't know that I don't know what it is. You may know what I don't know, but not that I don't know it, and I can't tell you. So you will have to tell me everything. - from: R.D. Las Vegas Pre-Teens
Dateline: 09/5/99 Kids from five to twelve years old may be the most fortunate in Las Vegas. They get into activities at half price or free, and they get to go where their parents want to go, too. The new book, " 101 Things for Kids in Las Vegas ", by Carol Stout, lists many places for kids to go in town. But, how about the things they can do while at home, on the internet? Those activities, too, are many, fun , as well as educational. Our climate is favorable to outdoor activity all year around. Sports are well organized for all ages, and there are plenty of parks available to play in. Schools are being added and expanded every year to cover the heavy increases in population. Contrary to the beliefs of the rest of the country, Las Vegas is a great place to be raised, these days. This was not true 15 and 20 years ago, when kids seemed to be left out of Las Vegas life. The 'fun' places did not exist or they were for adults only.

The Photo-Ethnography™ methodology has been specifically tailored to meet the special needs of teens and pre-teens who:
  • Are uncomfortable and often uncommunicative in new situations Prefer visual expression and find it easier to express themselves with pictures, stories, and music – rather than verbally Have relatively short-attention spans and need stimulation to keep them focused Are most productive with projects that truly interest and engage them.
We help teens and pre-teens think about how they express themselves with various exercises. We take special care with pre-teens, who take pictures of themselves with Polaroid cameras in the Orientation Session and then tell “stories" about the pictures. They also receive a “detective kit” to help them in their exploration and we involve their parents in the project. Teens receive a 35mm auto-focus zoom camera and film and money to buy music CDs – offering them two ways to express themselves. Request PowerPoint

may 2000 Diabetic-Lifestyle Just for Kids is an informative resource for parents of children with diabetes, offering kid-tested recipes and practical help. Diabetic-Lifestyle offers recipes, menus, medical updates, entertaining, travel - practical information to enhance life while managing diabetes on a daily basis. - Home Pre-Teen Girls' Slumber Party We're not overlooking the fact that boys also like slumber parties (between us we've raised three boys who all like sleep-overs). You can make the appropriate substitutes for boys: favorite car or truck instead of stuffed animal or Barbie doll, prizes and send-off goodies appropriate for boys, etc. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same-except you may get less sleep if the guests are boys, as they tend to stay up later and likely will eat more munchies. You may also wish to read the article we ran on October, 1998 on Super Sleep-Overs. A great slumber party begins with good planning. Over the years, our children have had several parties so here's what we've learned to do (and not do). First decide how many guests and then check to make sure there's enough floor space for that many sleeping bags and paraphernalia. Don't invite too many guests; usually four or five friends who get along together. Not all pre-teens are ready for slumber parties. It's better to check with parents first to see if the child has spent the night away from their parents, saving you a phone call to the parents in the middle of the night and probable embarrassment of the child. Also check to see if any child has any special health needs such as diabetes and make sure you're aware of any medicines and insulin injections that will be needed. Find out if the child gives their own injection or will need more than just your observance. Also find out if there are any food allergies. Is the child a vegetarian?

We all like to think of ourselves as pretty capable at our day jobs, but when it comes to coaching kids in baseball or softball, lack of experience can be a source of frustration and bad feelings all around. While it helps to have played a lot of baseball or softball yourself at some point in your life, it's not a prerequisite to being a good coach. Just like in the sport itself, coaching has certain fundamentals. Your two biggest concerns when coaching kids at the lower levels (pre-teen) should be : A) Make the experience fun That means fun for the kids, and fun for you too. If everyone is having a good time, you're doing something right. B) Teach the game There is a multitude of books on the finer points of coaching, teaching skills, drills, etc. Take the time to read these, but first, you must know how to teach. One rule of thumb when talking to a young player one-on-one (as simple as this sounds) is to not stand over him or her and talk down to him or her. Bend over so you're face level with him or her, or even kneel down, so he or she is even with you or a little above. It's amazing how this will prevent intimidation, and rivet his attention.

FAQ
Kids Privacy
If your kids are online you should tech them to be privacy wise about information they share about themselves. Often parents feel like their kids are one click ahead of them online. It is critical that you as parents take the time to talk with your kids about what personal information they share about themselves online, especially in chat rooms and on bulletin boards. Privacy concerns vary among children of different ages. Younger children are more vulnerable and should not disclose any information about themselves online without a parent's permission. Older teens should also be wary about disclosing information about themselves online. How you talk to your children whatever their ages about online privacy is your choice as a parent. However, there are some good rules to follow for both Pre-Teen and Teens alike. Pre-teens (Children Under 13) Teens (Children 13 and Over) Children under 13 should never give out information about themselves without a parent's permission. The playground rule, "Don't talk to strangers," applies online, too. When it comes to commercial Web sites, a federal law now requires commercial Web sites directed at kids to respect the privacy of children under 13 . Here's what you, as a parent, should know about protecting

What to Tell Your Children About HIV and AIDS
This page was reviewed or revised on Saturday, October 26, 2002. Whether their risk of infection seems slight or significant, children and teenagers need to know about HIV and AIDS. By providing accurate information, you can satisfy their curiosity, reduce their fears, and help them to protect themselves. Children can be affected by HIV and AIDS at any age. Teenagers may put themselves at risk or have friends they are concerned about. And younger children may have heard about it on television or from their friends, and wonder what it means to them. It also depends on how much they already know. Do they have health or family life classes at school? Human sexuality education should be part of the curriculum from kindergarten to the end of high school. They should be learning about HIV and AIDS prevention, but you can't assume they are. Ask them what is being taught or ask the school what resources are being used.

Pre-Teens Featured Article Making Your Home The Center of Activity by Dionna Sanchez As our children grow up, there are certain boundaries that naturally loosen as they become more mature and independent. When - and - if these boundaries ease up, all depends on how responsible each individual child is. When that point comes, your child's peers will seem to dominate their world more than you. There is a way for you to still guide your child without domineering them. That way is to make your home the center of their activities. By doing this you will learn who your child's friends are, how they act around one another and most importantly; what they are doing. Make your home inviting to your children's friends. Encourage your child to invite them to activities. Some ideas of things they could do in your home are: *watch movies (enabling you to oversee content) *have BBQ's (kids can bring their own meat to lesson costs) *swimming parties ( if you own a pool or are in a community with access to one) *watch sports - basketball, Olympics, Super-Bowl, World Series, etc.
