HIV and AIDS What should children know at various ages? Here are some suggestions: With the changes of puberty, pre-teens start becoming more concerned about their bodies and their looks. Parents need to talk to them about sexuality, AIDS and drugs. Give them accurate information, using the correct words for different parts of the body. This age group needs far more information, and in far more detail. Teenagers need to know that the best way to prevent HIV and AIDS is to avoid sexual intercourse and injection drug use. But they need to know about condoms and birth control too, and how drugs and alcohol can affect their judgment. Tell them about the high risk of sharing needles for injecting drugs, including steroids, or for ear and body piercing or tattoos. Make sure they understand that AIDS is not just a disease that affects gay men. It can affect anyone who engages in risky behaviours. For conversation openers, try these: Leave a book or magazine article on HIV or AIDS around the house for them to read.

Wilderness Summer Camps Alternative summer camps that emphasize experiential therapy can profoundly affect teens who are struggling with behavior. Parents who have teens that seem to be heading down the "wrong path" will often see dramatic changes in their adolescent's attitude, behavior, and motivation after a therapeutic wilderness experience. The best wilderness programs have a high ratio of field instructors or counselors to students. This makes the therapeutic experience the most rewarding, because no student can be "lost in the crowd." Some of these programs have been in existence for many years, and we list some of the most respected therapeutic wilderness programs for troubled teens in the United States. Experience Summers that Change Lives... Featured Program SUWS Youth Adolescent programs of Idaho offer therapeutic outdoor experiences in the beautiful Idaho wilderness. Younger students (ages 11-13) take part in an exceptional program that addresses the needs of this age group. Older adolescents take part in a challenging wilderness program for teens. In both programs students hike trails and learn primitive skills such as fire building without matches, basic traps, and other survival techniques. The small groups are led by experienced counselors.

Hi Jackie Thanks again for your interest in our work. If you are looking to build a program to compete against conventional youth sports programs I would suggest that you try to develop a program that is 'child centered' (i.e., focusses upon the needs and preferences of the children). In contrast many youth sports programs focus on the needs of the adults and not the children (e.g., all star team, medals, playoffs etc...). A child centered program should first and foremost focus upon fun and learning. These are the two primary reasons children in this age group give for participation in sport. This means de-emphasising competition, and emphasising the development of basic motor skills through fun and excitinig activities. The activities that you should provide should reflect the activities that children participate in when left to their own devices. You should not rule out sports but provide a wide variety of sports for the kids to participate in. You might even consider inviting in guest teachers who can introduce the children to a wide variety of different activities. This may be a winner witht he parents. If you do play traditional sports mix up the teams regulalrly (e.g., so the final teams do not resemble the initial teams) so the kids are less focussed upon competition and more on learning and having fun. I'm not sure exactly where to point you in terms of finding material related to your interest. I will have a word with some of our professors in motor development. They should be able to help.

Without a doubt, parenting will be the hardest "job" anyone will ever have. I don't think you'll find many people to argue with me on that one. Even firemen and police officers get to rest or go home and get away from it all. How many of us have tried to get away from it all with our spouses, only to find that the only thing we can think of to talk about is our kids? You will never get time off. If my parents are anything to go by, I don't even think you'll get time off when your little ones are big ones and leave the "nest". I know that my parents think and worry and worry and think about me every day. So, here are some things to help. What you need to do is, take a break, wait, I forgot, you don't get a break...ok, HIDE from your kids for about 10 minutes and see what other emommies have to say about parenting. Don't forget, if you've got kids, you're a professional in our book, so send us your thoughts on parenting The Terrific Toddlers School Agers The Pre-Teen Parenting Teens u A Special Call for Parents of Pre-Teens and Teens ~ Speak Out!

How to Stop Your Kids From Smoking None of us want our kids to follow in our footsteps when it comes to our vices. Here are some tips to prevent your kids from smoking. Difficulty Level: hard Time Required: varies Here's How:
  • Be honest with yourself about your smoking.
  • Admit to yourself you are addicted.
  • Acknowledge that you and your clothes smell of cigarette smoke.
  • Admit that your car and house smell of cigarette smoke.
  • Acknowledge that the smell of cigarettes is offensive to kids.
  • Work hard not to smoke around your children, not because you're hiding it, but because it's bad for them.
  • When your toddler asks why you smoke, keep it simple and truthful, like "I smoke because I have a nasty dirty habit."

Surveys show that pre-teens have concerns about sex, yet many parents delay conversations about puberty, sex, and related issues. Do parents start early enough in educating their children about sexuality issues? There are mixed signals in a recent national survey by the children's entertainment network Nickelodeon along with the Kaiser Family Foundation and Children Now. Kaiser and Children Now are sponsors of "Talking with Kids About Tough Issues," an ongoing campaign to encourage early and frequent parent-child communication The national poll of 800 children ages 8 to 15 and over 1200 parents examined how families communicate about difficult topics, including drugs and violence as well as issues of sex and maturation. More than two-thirds of pre-teens (ages 8-11) say they know classmates who already have boyfriends or girlfriends, 16% see students kissing in school, and 41% seek information about HIV/AIDS. Kids even bring up the subject. Among the 49% of parents who have discussed reproduction with their pre-teens, many say that their child initiated the conversation: 61% about reproduction, 40% about puberty, and 38% about HIV/AIDS.

How to Talk with Your Teen
    About the Facts of Life

We live in a very sexual world. There are messages about sex all around us -radio and TV, in movies, magazines, and music. Sex is used to sell everything from soap to sports cars. Political and religious leaders have a lot to say about sex, too. So do people in locker rooms, in malls, and in our own homes. Our kids hear it all.
But despite all the talk, our kids don't get much useful information.
Many kids become confused and may be pressured into sexual intercourse before they are ready. Too often sexual abuse, sexually transmitted infections, and unwanted pregnancy shape their lives.
We want our children to have healthy and rewarding lives. And we all know that teaching them about sex is very important.
Why do teens need to know about sexuality?
Understanding sexuality helps kids cope with their feelings and with peer pressure. It lets them take charge of their lives and have loving relationships. It also helps protect them from sexual abuse - from becoming sexual abusers.
Further, young people who talk openly with their parents about sex are more likely to ask for information and advice. They are also more likely to protect themselves.

this is Jaime and I am responding to ur letter. I am a 16-year-old myself and and confronted by peer pressure often and I feel that maybe they just need a reality check. I feel that one of the reasons "people" my age start smoking is bc they don't have a clue as of what it does to a person. I do....and everytime someone asks me I always give them the same answer...."NO"...I see what it has done to my grandma and many of her friends and it tears me up inside and out, to know that some people just don't care. So, personally, I think they need for it to hit home, for them to receive a reality check to the dangers and causes of smoking. I also want u and everyone who receives this email to know that whatever I can do to help....just let me know bc I personally would be more than happy to help to increase of teenage smoking turn into a decrease. • Very good choice of teens (some from each walk of life) Very good host (blonde female) Teens will listen to other teens better than to grown-ups so this video was good in that sense. Teens will think about what it would be like to have problems breathing at young age just because they smoke.
