ABSTRACT: Papers documenting many aspects of the long and active life of a Wisconsin elementary school through university level educator. Mrs. Crawford was the first degree-trained elementary teacher-supervisor in Wisconsin. She also gave to the field the kindergarten-level planned activity program. The collection consists primarily of correspondence, newspaper clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks dating from Mrs. Crawford's childhood to her activities after retirement. Particular emphasis is given to her early teaching career and to her husband's (Frederick G. Crawford, 1907-1949) life and inventions. Other areas of Mrs. Crawford's life, such as her activities as one of the founders of the Wisconsin chapter of the educational sorority Delta Kappa Gamma and her extensive travels, are also documented in the collection. The collection is at the Milwaukee Area Research Center.

Kindergarten at Greenfield College The kindergarten years are perhaps the most important in a child's schooling. At Greenfield, we believe in the importance of this early education. We try to instill in our students an affinity for social activity and teamwork and we search to encourage their creative and intellectual abilities. As in later years, our kindergarten is divided into English and French sections. Each section is divided into three classes, Nursery, KG1 and KG2, for students aged 3 to 6 years. This year, the school has introduced a pre-Nursery class for 2-3 year-olds. Only a limited number of students are enrolled each year to ensure that each and every student receives the due attention he or she deserves. Please click here to see a typical day's activities.
Learning Environment: all lessons are held in big, bright, colorful, cool classrooms cascading with creativity and stimuli! Each classroom is divided into sections such as the phonics center, science corner, play area, etc. Children are encouraged to work individually, in pairs, in groups and as a class respectively.
Leisure Time: The kindergarten has its own playground with special safety slides and mini basketball areas, a giant birdcage and green space. A large indoor space is where sports activities take place and children play on rainy days. The annual winter and spring shows are also held there.

Studies and Evaluations FY 1998 Appropriation: $6,700,000 Purpose
This program authorizes studies to evaluate the impact of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), including efforts to provide a free appropriate public education to children and youth with disabilities, and early intervention services to infants and toddlers with disabilities. Specific studies may focus on an analysis of State and local needs for professional development, parent training, and other activities that can reduce the need for disciplinary actions; longitudinal measurement of the educational and transitional results of children with disabilities and those from minority backgrounds; and/or the reporting of the placement status of children with disabilities by disability category.
Program Activities: National Research Council Study on Disproportionate Representation (84.324A; $600,000; 1 new grant) Center for Policy Research on the Impact of General and Special Education Reform (84.023H; $500,000; 1 continuation cooperative agreement) . The purpose of this center, operated by the National Association of State Boards of Education, Alexandria, VA, is to investigate and analyze critical issues in current general and special education policies, their interactions, and their impact on students with disabilities, with a focus on discerning policy options for stakeholders at the Federal, State and local levels. The center uses primarily qualitative research methodologies, including systematic policy review and case study design. The center will deliver: (a) a report on the interaction of general and special education reform efforts; (b) in-depth case studies on how State-level special and general education reform policies interact with and impact on local school districts and students with disabilities; and case studies of school districts engaging in reform of both general and special education (e.g., "inclusive" schools), including their interactions with State-level education policies.

Top 10 Signs of a
Good Kindergarten Classroom Kindergarten is a time for children to expand their love of learning, their general knowledge, their ability to get along with others, and their interest in reaching out to the world. While kindergarten marks an important transition from preschool to the primary grades, it is important that children still get to be children getting kindergarteners ready for elementary school does not mean substituting academics for play time, forcing children to master first grade "skills," or relying on standardized tests to assess children’s success. Kindergarten "curriculum" actually includes such events as snack time, recess, and individual and group activities in addition to those activities we think of as traditionally educational. Developmentally appropriate kindergarten classrooms encourage the growth of children’s self-esteem, their cultural identities, their independence and their individual strengths. Kindergarten children continue to develop control of their own behavior through the guidance and support of warm, caring adults. At this stage, children are already eager to learn and possess an innate curiosity. Teachers with a strong background in early childhood education and child development can best provide for children what they need to grow physically, emotionally, and intellectually.
