Cheryl Sigmon describes and contrasts the two in Ariticle #16 on Teachers.Net The overall goal of Building Blocks is to provide a developmentally appropriate kindergarten classroom which accepts all children where they are and takes them forward on their literacy journey. The six Building Blocks are not separate structured blocks, but are goals which are integrated throughout the instructional day of a Kindergarten classroom through a variety of activities. The LKB Philosophy of Education
  • Each child has a right to a quality education
  • Education should be child-centered
  • Children have the capacity to critically evaluate their environment and should be an active part of the learning process
  • Teachers are facilitators for learning and not just disseminators of information
  • The process of learning is just as valuable as the knowledge acquired
  • Education should make real world connections
  • Parents are partners in the education process
  • Each child should have the opportunity to experience success
  • The cultural heritage of each child is valuable
  • Children may use a combination of learning styles such as tactile, visual, and auditory

Phonetically oriented reading instruction, mathematics, spelling, and manuscript, as well as instruction in Christian doctrine through a study of the Chapel service and Bible stories, form the core of the kindergarten curriculum. The class begins each day with a worship service. The children work hard to learn the Morning Prayer service and after a few weeks are able to recite much of it from memory. They enjoy singing the hymns of praise and learn to be attentive, reverent, and enthusiastic in their response.

L.I.F.E. for Grades 5 through 12: Wednesday Nights at 7:00 PM
L.I.F.E. (Life is for Everyone) is an exciting new program for the teens of our church in grades 5 through 12. It began September 6th, and in the first few sessions, over 40 teens took part in the new youth group program. Highlighted by theme nights and wild, wacky games, the program emphasizes fun and fellowship and a message about Christ each week. Developed by Train Depot, this program is designed as both a community outreach for teens and a terrific Christian growth program for our kids and adult workers. Teens are encouraged to bring friends and participate in the competitions. They come for the fun and walk out having had an opportunity to welcome Christ into their hearts every week.

    Q. 1) Which do you think is better: full-day or half-day kindergarten for a five-year-old? 2) My daughter has been in a gifted and talented school since she was two years old. I will keep her there at least until she can start kindergarten (when she is almost six in the year 2000). Her school at this time goes through grade six. What things should I consider when I decide to keep her there or send her to public kindergarten? A. Every year more and more children are attending full-day kindergarten. The length of the school day, however, is only one dimension of the kindergarten experience. Other important issues include the nature of the curriculum, the quality of the teaching, and the needs of the family and child. Three hours of a high quality program are superior to six hours of a very average program. Research studies do show a positive relationship between students who attend a full-day kindergarten program and their academic and social success in later school performance, especially in the first three grades. One of the major advantages of longer day programs is the additional time children have to do all the things that kindergartners typically do.

Home General Questions and Answers Is Breakthrough to Literacy research-based? Yes. Breakthrough prides itself on its continued research-and-results orientation. The program began as a research tool at the University of Iowa nearly 20 years ago. Dr. Carolyn Brown, the program's developer, was a researcher working with individual students who were having difficulty learning to read. The wealth of primary research information generated by her work, as well as secondary research gathered from the most current literature on early literacy, drove the evolution of the Breakthrough process. It grew into a set of tools, professional development, and support designed to assist teachers in identifying and addressing the needs of all their students. Research at Breakthrough to Literacy continues today.
