Research tells us that when a family works with their child on schoolwork and becomes involved in their child's learning, their child is more likely to succeed academically. Whether you are a family member or a learning partner/tutor, supporting your child in his or her schoolwork can make a real difference! The School-Home Links activities provided in this kit are keyed directly to reading activities that teachers typically do with children in school. These School-Home Links provide your family with an extra opportunity for learning at home. The School-Home Links are intended to be family activities. Your child will need your support in completing these activities. Remember that every child learns at his or her own speed, and most children learn within three-year developmental periods. Some children acquire the skills of a developmental period early; others will take longer and may need to work harder. This means your child may find the School-Home Links very easy, or on grade, or difficult, depending upon your child's rate of growth. Wherever your child is, when you work with your child daily on the School-Home Links and similar reading activities, you can help your child grow steadily in reading and improve important skills.

Kindergarten to 1st grade
by Maile Carpenter The secret to helping your child learn to read is showing him that reading can provide endless hours of fun. Here are some great activity ideas for your beginning reader. Because children learn in different ways, we've arranged these activities by learning style. If you're not sure what your child's learning style is, take our quiz. Click here for the preschool to kindergarten quiz or here for the 1st to 3rd grade quiz. But any child can benefit from the suggestions in all three categories. What's below: For physical learners For auditory learners For visual learners For physical learners
Get a library card in your child's name
Go the library together and visit the checkout counter to apply for a library card. If he knows how to spell his own name, ask him to tell you while you write it down on the application. When you get the card, make a copy of it and laminate it so your child has a card of his own to carry around; if your library system uses plastic cards with bar codes, get your child his own card as they are easily replaced. Play dress-up and act out a book Dressing up like the characters in your child's favorite book can really bring reading to life. You can invite some of your child's friends over and make it a playdate.

The six Building Blocks are not separate structured blocks, but are goals which are integrated throughout the instructional day of a Kindergarten classroom through a variety of activities. Kindergartens in Palo Alto are committed to maintaining students' natural curiosity and confidence in themselves as learners while developing the student behaviors that will enable them to become active and focused learners in a classroom setting. The following summary of the instructional program provides an overview of the Kindergarten year. Expectations are, of course, modified or expanded to meet a child's needs and abilities. The Kindergarten program builds on skills and knowledge children learn at home or pre-school. The manner of instruction - motivation, grouping, pacing, reinforcing and reteaching - is determined by each teacher as he or she works to meet individual needs. School Day Highlights
B.F. Day has a long and proud history of educating children in Seattle. We are the oldest, continually operating school in the city. Our building is a designated historic landmark having undergone state-of-the-art renovation in 1991. B.F. Day has an outstanding record of parent and community participation in school governance and support. Our school was one of the first Seattle elementary schools to institute a Site Council with staff, parent and community participation. We have an active Parent Teacher Student Association ( PTSA ), which supports the many special programs offered to our students. A Parent Volunteer Coordinator helps place parent and community volunteers in classrooms, the library and tutoring programs. In 1996, B.F. Day instituted a Parent/Teacher/Student contract signed by all teachers and families attending the school. Parents make a commitment to volunteer a minimum of 15 hours per family to support the school. Eighty percent of all B.F. Day families currently fulfill this commitment. B.F. Day has a long-term relationship with the Fremont Arts Council, which provides volunteer involvement for school art, projects. The Fremont Chamber of Commerce partners with the school for annual fundraising activities. Our new neighbor, Adobe Corporation, provides technology and resources to the school.

Personalized books help make reading fun!
Raising a Reader Reading begins at home. As a parent you are the first and most important link on the road to reading. Enjoy stories with your child from a very early age. Even newborns can sense your enthusiasm when you read to them. Try to set aside a special time each and every day that you and your child can enjoy a number of books together without interruption. Your child will signal you when he or she begins to tire of this activity. Let this be your clue that story time has ended. It is probably best to let your child dictate the length of time spent reading and you will find that as the activity becomes standard, your child will sit and listen for longer periods of time. Be sure and engage your child in conversations, for communicating orally is a prerequisite to understanding the written word. Encourage and ask questions like "Why?", "What would you have done?" or "Who was your favorite character?" from a book or television show. Your child will have a lot of fun choosing books from the library or bookstore and will enjoy even the simplest of tales. Once your child begins to read independently, take turns reading to each other. This is also a great time to begin to read longer stories, perhaps a chapter or two a day. There are plenty of books out there that will keep them on the edge of their seats until the next reading session.
