It promises to be exciting and worthwhile everyone who chooses to participate. Please review the following guidelines carefully with your PS-5th grade students. We encourage all DNES Busy Bees to become actively involved in READING! DNES students will be encouraged to "engage in reading activity" for 30 minutes daily. Good readers enjoy many different reading activities. Some prefer independent reading, others enjoy reading aloud, or being read to by parents and/or siblings. For the beginning Pre-School and Kindergarten student, reading may be reviewing letter books and other assignments that are brought home from school. All of the above mentioned activities are acceptable reading projects for our school program. 15 of the 30 minutes will be monitored by the school teacher during classtime. Delta North teachers recognize the importance of making reading enjoyable and will devote 15 minutes daily to recreational reading. Student participation during this time will be monitored closely by the teacher. Students who utilize the time responsibly will earn 15 Bee Bucks per day. 300 Bee Bucks can be earned per month for this daily school-time reading.

Phonetically oriented reading instruction, mathematics, spelling, and manuscript, as well as instruction in Christian doctrine through a study of the Chapel service and Bible stories, form the core of the kindergarten curriculum. The class begins each day with a worship service. The children work hard to learn the Morning Prayer service and after a few weeks are able to recite much of it from memory. They enjoy singing the hymns of praise and learn to be attentive, reverent, and enthusiastic in their response.

Literacy Centers:
all of my centers contain tasks for high, medium, and low
students.
We read the Three Bears and talk about finding a task that is "just right" for them. Not too easy, not too hard, but just right.
1. puzzles - alphabet puzzles and word puzzles. 2. Alpha -bears - I found these at a teacher store - upper and lower case alphabets on flat little bears. It contains task cards and students at all levels can find an appropriate task. 3. Alphabet stamps - upper and lower case - 1 inch grid paper for sequencing. Word families to copy. Student names to copy. Strips of paper to stamp words and sentences. 4. Magnetic letters and magnetic boards. I make a name card for each student with name and picture and add a magnetic strip to the back. Word cards and name cards are always available - also alphabet strips are placed in all centers.
