OVERVIEW
The "Senses" unit provides students a variety of experiences that encourage them to become more aware of how to use all their senses to more closely observe and describe objects and phenomena in the world around them. They are encouraged to look more closely. to touch, to listen, to smell, and taste when appropriate. They are asked to notice detail, to discriminate, to compare, and to contrast. Through discussion they develop and share a rich vocabulary to communicate their thought.
SFUSD SCIENCE CONTENT STANDARDS
Using the materials in the "Senses" unit the following standards can be addressed: SOUND CONTENT STANDARD 9: Students understand that the movement of certain objects produce sound. Sound is produced by vibrating objects and the pitch of the sound can be varied by changing the rate of vibration. STRUCTURE and FUNCTION CONTENT STANDARD 11: Students understand that living things have features that enable them to survive. Living things have similar characteristics yet are diverse in the way in which they adapt to their habitat.
MANAGEMENT TIPS
  • " I'm integrating the "Senses" unit with the "Seeds and Weeds" unit. My students are working in the school garden looking at seeds, tasting the fruit, writing letters and words in their science journal (along with pictures), and planting their seeds to observe growth over time."

Welcome to Kindergarten
Welcome
We are looking forward to welcoming your child in our schools. Waterloo Region District School Board staff work hard to provide the best kindergarten experiences possible. You play an important role in your child's success in school. Your support, involvement and encouragement are a key factors in your child's education. What is kindergarten? Kindergarten is a two-year program that includes junior and senior kindergarten. It is available to any child turning four on or before December 31 of the current year. Up-to-date educational policies and learning expectations are reflected in the program as outlined in The Kindergarten Program, 1998 (Ministry of Education and Training). What happens next? Once your child is registered in junior kindergarten, your school will notify you about other important events and information opportunities including an information night where you will get to meet school staff and hear about the school's kindergarten program. How will the school year start? Your child's first days of school in September will be on a staggered entry basis. This allows your child to join a small group of children and the teacher to learn about classroom activities and routines before the entire class is gathered. You will also be asked to fill out an information questionnaire and a private visit with the teacher will be arranged for you and your child.

Back to Kindergarten Curriculum Wood Embryology Weather Wood In the Wood unit students are introduced to a variety of kinds of wood in a systematic way so that they will observe and compare the properties of wood, discover how wood materials interact with water, and experience how they can change wood into various products. In Properties of Wood, students work with five different samples of wood (basswood, particleboard, pine, plywood, and redwood) to observe their properties. They investigate wood in water and find out what it takes to sink samples of wood. In Woodworking, students begin by using sandpaper to change the shape of wood. They explore the resulting sawdust and wood shavings. They put wood together by making sandwich wood ( plywood) and sawdust wood (particleboard). They also put wood together with nails and glue to create wood sculptures. Concepts
  • Compare different kinds of wood to discover how they are alike and how they are different. Different kinds of wood interact differently when submerged in water. The properties of floating and sinking.

Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor's degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities will stem from the large number of teachers expected to retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; job outlook will vary by geographic area and subject specialty.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and "hands-on" learning to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. As teachers move away from the traditional repetitive drill approaches and rote memorization, they are using more "props" or "manipulatives" to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or adding and subtracting by playing board games. As children get older, they use more sophisticated materials such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers.
