SOCIAL STUDIES
    Classroom Experiences:
  • Include toys related to methods of transportation in play areas; Trucks, cars, buses, trains, airplanes and helicopters can be added to the block area, and boats and barges can be added to the water table. The teacher can help children focus on the concept of the necessity of transporting goods and people.
  • Children can take short walks in their neighborhood and identify structures (houses, businesses, churches and so on)
  • Children can be led to observe changes in their immediate environments, such as changes in the room, on the playground, or in the school building.
  • Encourage children to create structures with blocks that represent what they know of their community and neighborhood. They might construct a fire station, gas station, harbor, airport, etc.
  • Children can work together to move toys or materials that need to be moved or to clean up the materials and play area.
  • Teachers can keep a large scrapbook with records of important events in the children's experiences. Reviewing it with the children will teach them that we can keep records of events and that these records help us to recall the events accurately
  • Learn about the world of work by visiting workplaces in the neighborhood and making models of the neighborhood. Ask school or community workers to be guest speakers in the classroom.

The Individual and Group Relationships
Introduction
In kindergarten children begin with a study of themselves and their families, of how they grow and change, and of their similarities and differences. As children acclimate themselves to the classroom and school environment, develop skill in working in groups, and become more individually responsible, they achieve important social studies goals. In the kindergarten program, children develop and refine concepts about themselves and about the family as a basic institution in human society. They come to under-stand that there are basic needs common to all people. As they learn about children and their families in other environments, they perceive likenesses and differences among people. Finally, they realize that although people have basically the same needs, they may meet these needs in a variety of ways. Goals in kindergarten are accomplished at various times in a variety of ways as children grow and learn throughout the year. Progress toward the goals is based on the individuality of each child in the context of the entire kindergarten program.

Home and School
Introduction
In first grade, children build on concepts introduced in the kindergarten year as they learn about children, their families, homes, and schools in a variety of contexts. They gain important perspectives as they compare their own home and school life with that of children in environments and societies different from their own. They continue to develop skills of group participation and become more individually responsible, thus achieving important social studies goals. By studying home and school life, children come to an understanding of the university of basic human wants and needs. They learn that family and school rules are established for the common good and are a necessary part of group living. In so doing they begin to develop important understandings about the nature of citizenship. Goals in first grade are accomplished at various times in a variety of ways as children grow and learn throughout the year. Progress toward the goals is based on the individuality of each child in the context of the entire first grade program.

Language Arts
The language arts curriculum is centered around learning letters, sounds, and emergent reading skills. Children are immersed in a print-rich and literature-rich environment. Children also participate in daily activities which encourage communicating ideas orally and through pictures and writing. Language skills are integrated into science and social studies thematic activities.
Math
Kindergartners at Shady Grove participate in the Silver Burdett Ginn Kindergarten math program. This program covers sorting, patterning, basic geometry, time, money, measurement, addition, and subtraction. In addition, teachers at Shady Grove rely on many hands-on activities which enable students to develop a strong number sense while giving them the tools needed to develop higher-level problem-solving skills.
Science
Kindergartners at Shady Grove take advantage of the many opportunities provided by our new science lab. Our science curriculum covers a wide range of topics which are covered with a variety of hands-on activities. Throughout the year students study life cycles with animal and plant units. They make scientific observations about the changing seasons with the help of our very own Shady Grove weather lab. Through experiments we also learn how magnets work and discover the different states of matter. The kindergarten topics serve as a strong foundation for more advanced scientific ideas.
