Objectives To teach children that there are many different kind of doctors that are our friends. Materials Resource People Different doctors:
  • Dentist,
  • Eye Doctor
  • Ear-Eye-Throat
  • baby doctor
  • heart doctor
  • foot doctor
  • animal doctor
Procedures Have the different doctors come and visit the class and tell about their jobs. If you are lucky enough to have several doctors within walking distance, ask to visit. My kindergarten visited 5 doctors in one day. We visited a baby doctor (my two absent were there), three general medical doctors (learned about x-rays,freezing warts of girl's leg,and the doctor has pillow like home on exam table), dentist. After the trip we compared the doctors by discussions, graphs of favorite, listed the different types. Extensions This can be adapted to any community resource you may have near your school. Walking field trips are very educational. We stop and take time to notice everything on our way, birds, signs, truck, safety rules. Career Awareness should be started as young as possible.

Kindergarten
The emphasis in kindergarten is on preparing the whole child to learn by using concrete activities. The arts, movement, rhythm, songs and literature are integrated to aid the child in developing reading and writing readiness. Reading readiness activities encourage the child to enjoy and share books. The student begins to understand the concepts of letters, sounds, words and how to use visual and auditory strategies to "read" books and to decode simple words. While writing, the child develops the fine motor skills necessary to write legibly. Students learn they can "write" their thoughts through pictures or though oral expression by dictating thoughts and ideas to another person. In math, students explore numbers, sets, sorting, shapes, patterns and comparisons in concrete ways. Children are also introduced to measurement, time and money.

SOCIAL STUDIES
    Classroom Experiences:
  • Include toys related to methods of transportation in play areas; Trucks, cars, buses, trains, airplanes and helicopters can be added to the block area, and boats and barges can be added to the water table. The teacher can help children focus on the concept of the necessity of transporting goods and people.
  • Children can take short walks in their neighborhood and identify structures (houses, businesses, churches and so on)
  • Children can be led to observe changes in their immediate environments, such as changes in the room, on the playground, or in the school building.
  • Encourage children to create structures with blocks that represent what they know of their community and neighborhood. They might construct a fire station, gas station, harbor, airport, etc.
  • Children can work together to move toys or materials that need to be moved or to clean up the materials and play area.
  • Teachers can keep a large scrapbook with records of important events in the children's experiences. Reviewing it with the children will teach them that we can keep records of events and that these records help us to recall the events accurately
  • Learn about the world of work by visiting workplaces in the neighborhood and making models of the neighborhood. Ask school or community workers to be guest speakers in the classroom.
