April Mills - The Knitting Mills
April Mills, The Knitting Mills
Hello, I'm April Mills of The Knitting Mills. In 1969 I borrowed a Studio 301 knitting machine from an Aunt and fell in love with machine knitting. But that machine had to be returned, and two children later I bought a Studio 301 in 1974. Constantly trading up since then, Studio, Brother, and Passap machines (6 total) are presently in my studio. "The Knitting Mills" has published designs in knitting publications since 1990, and has sold garments at juried Arts and Crafts Shows since 1984. I was the technical editor for the Machine Knitters Source magazine for six years, until May, 1997, when the magazine moved to Texas. I have also managed production machine knitters for hat, sweater, and Christmas stocking companies. Teaching at knitting seminars around the U.S. and Canada, and recently Australia and New Zealand, is an activity that I enjoy. I taught at the two Technical and Design Forums, and Brit-Am 1996. Please contact me for a complete listing of the classes. I can teach at your seminar or guild workshops in 2001-2002.

Despite its title, this book applies to more than pattern wheel machines. It serves as a general guide for understanding the mechanics of weft circular knitting machines. Published in 1949 by Supreme Knitting Machine Co., it's still relevant today. After repeated requests for copies of the original press run, that is no longer available, it was decided to publish it in this manner. Please feel free to download and print. You may distribute it only in its entirety, without changes, preserving all credits. The book's presence on the Internet is due to the kind cooperation of Mr. Bruce Pernick of Vanguard Supreme . Many thanks. Back to Top Last updated: October 15, 2002

A merry month of May to you all! Spring is one of those glorious times of year that surrounds us with incomparable beauty and awesome weather. It is also, perhaps, the season of greatest change. It is a time of rebirth and new beginnings. The cold winds of winter have given way to warm, gentle breezes as the earth sheds its drab and dreary winter garb. We revel in the dazzling displays of colorful blooms amid carpets of lush, green grass, and we are awed once again at the birth of baby animals. Spring is a season that always seems to reaffirm our faith in the beauty of the world and the continuity of life. This issue represents a new beginning for me as well. It is here that I begin my duties as editor for Knitting Digest magazine. This is a fascinating and rewarding experience for me, working with a first-rate production team whose tireless hard work and combined efforts produce the final product you hold in your hands. It has inspired and challenged me to bring you the best in exciting, original patterns and interesting, informative features to enhance your knitting pleasure. In looking ahead, I hope every new issue of

Call to Action:
The G8 in Kananaskis, 2002
In Calgary
Wednesday, June 26,
Outside Bankers Hall on Stephen Avenue pedestrian walkway.
We'll be engaging in lawful, peaceful, tactics to make a safe space for all-ages and backgrounds.
General Call to Action
The G8 claims to be a gathering of democratic leaders. The Revolutionary Knitting Circle proclaims that they are anything but. The G8 is a meeting of the wealthiest of the world to decide the fates of the vast majority of the world who are in no way represented by these 'leaders'. We call upon activists throughout the world to join together in a Global Knit-In to challenge the G8 and the global corporatism it stands for. Our primary day of action will be Wednesday, June 26, 2002. On that day, we ask you to organize a group of knitters and learners to knit (or some other subsistence-related productive activity) at one of the seats of corporate power in your communities. Transform those spaces through knitting. Create 'soft' barriers of knitted yarn to reclaim spaces from the elite to the common good. As the community is knitted together, corporate commerce is slowed or halted and the community can prosper.

Knitting Techniques
Mary Ellen Meisters Most of the following techniques are not original with me, but are ideas I have collected during my fifty years of knitting. I use them all the time and think it is convenient to have them written in one place, especially for anyone who is not used to using them.
Tubular cast-on for one-by-one ribbing or for double knitting
  • Row 1: With scrap yarn, using the simple cast-on (sometimes called backwards thumb cast-on) cast on one-half the stitches required plus 1.
  • Row 2: With the yarn you will use for the garment, and needles 2 or 3 sizes smaller than those needed for the ribbing, *knit 1, yarn over (yo)*; repeat between *s across row, ending with knit 1. This will give you an odd number of stitches.
  • Row 3: *Slip 1 as if to purl with yarn in front, knit 1*; repeat between *s across row, ending with a slip 1.
  • Row 4: *Knit 1, slip 1 as if to purl with yarn in front*; repeat between *s across row, ending with a knit 1.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 at least once, then change to the size needle required for the ribbing and work 1-by-1 ribbing the usual way for the desired length. Remove the scrap yarn and you have a neat rounded elastic edge through which you may run elastic.
Tubular bind off for one-by-one ribbing or for double knitting
For tubular or double knitting in the round
  • Row 1: *Knit 1, slip 1 as if to purl with yarn in front*; repeat between *s around.

About these patterns:

These are two color per row graphs, for hand or machine knitting. Some of them are 24 stitch repeats, for punchcard machines. I've included two versions, colored graphs, and symbol graphs. You can look at the colored one to see what the pattern looks like, then print out the symbol graph, and color in your own scheme.

If you have a Singer, Passap or other brand, you may need to modify it. It is an elaborate semi floral, with lots of movement. Very Feminine. Because of the length of the graph, it is presented in two parts, part one being the bottom, part two the top. You will see the separation line. Just connect the graph there.
