komodos are the only animal, besides humans, that willingly control their population(by way of eating their own eggs). komodos are diurnal and solitary.

The Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) By: Daniel Hiller The Komodo dragon was first discovered to the scientific world by accident. During the First World War a pilot crashed into Indonesian waters and swam to safety to a nearby island. What he didn’t realize at first was that this island he found was not safe! He soon found out that these giant lizards never seem to most of the world before lived on the island. Luckily, the pilot was able to radio to home and was picked up but no one believed his "dragon" story. Later, an expedition was formed and his reports were confirmed. Physical Characteristics Varanus komodoensis Habitat
The Komodo dragon mostly lives on the Komodo Island of Indonesia. These groups of islands are called Lesser Sunda Islands. All are part of Indonesia. Komodos live in self-dug burrows in the terrain. They like hot, arid grasslands on the island. The Komodo Island is about 520 sq. km. The highest elevation is 825 m. There is only one village on the entire island where humans live. It is called the Komodo Village and they practice Muslim. Komodos are not a real threat to the village because they know and respect the Komodos. They are lived together for hundreds of years. Diet The diet of the Komodo dragon is somewhat simple, anything it kills! They are carnivorous and primarily feed on Sunda deer. They will also prey on birds, snakes, wild horses, wild boar, water buffalo, and very seldomly humans! There has only been one death from the village people and more from tourists. The tourists have more of a chance of an attack because they don’t really understand the Komodo dragon like the people who inhabit the islands. Komodo will also feed on any kind of carrion (already dead meat). The young Komodos feed on insects and geckos while they live in the tees.

KOMODO MONITOR CONTINUED Range and Habitat: Komodo monitors are found on the three small Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca and the western end of Flores. Komodo monitors inhabit areas that are commonly hot and dry for much of the year, but are subjected to a short monsoon season during which most of the year's 35 inches of rain occurs. Preferred vegetation can vary from dry open grasslands and savannas, to tropical forests at lower elevations. Habits and Adaptations :: Young monitors are well adapted to their arboreal life where their coloration is a useful camouflage and the slender body, long tail and sharp claws enable them to move through the trees. As they become older, the coloration changes as does the body confirmation and many of the daily habits. They eventually become terrestrial where they become more interactive with other Komodos and change feeding habits to larger prey and carrion.

ENTERING THE DRAGONN`S WORLD Indonesia has osme rare and endagered animals which cannot be found in other countries. The java rhino, the orang utan (the man –like ape), and the komodo dragon, a beast arguably linked to the age of the dinosaurus, are some living examples, The komodo is unequivocally a very special crature in the world of animals. So if you want to know more about these dragon like- animals, let`s visit their world. Varanus Komodoensis or the komodo dragon is know as the largest living in the world. These giant monitor lizards are found only on komodo islanmd and on some small islands nearby, komodo, a small volcanic islanmd, is located 200 miles east of bali In Indonesia. Komodo dragons ussually live in Lowland areas with grasslands and palm tress. Sometimes they can also be found in mountainous regions. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Atypical wee-fed adult male mearsure about 2.6 m long and weighs about 100 kg. The female measures about 2.3 m long and wieghs about 7.5 kg. Brownish-grey or sandy-brown in color. This heavy built giant lizard has d flattened, triangular head. Its four short powerful legs with sharp clawed feet can be used in self-defense quite effectively. A massive long tail, which is usually longer than the body, can deliver powerful crushing blows. This unique creature has a mouth with low jaw bones which can open widely to accommodate large prey. The teeth are arranged so that maximum amount of flesh can be bitten off and swallowed whole. The komodo`s saliva contains four forms of poisonous bacteria woth no know antidotes. A large yellow forked tongue is rapidly flicked I and out to pick up tiny chemical particles which are sensed by a special reptile organ called jacobson`s organ, This organ gives the komodo a keen sense of smell.

Patrick - A traumatized teen who witnessed his dog and parents getting attacked and eaten by the Komodos. He acts very strangely through the whole film, for instance he tears out the heart of a dead Komodo. He bravely captures and kills one of the vicious lizards. Victoria - Jill Hennessy! The psychologist who takes Patrick back to the island to help him conquer his fears. She soon learns that the trip may be doing more harm than good. She takes out a Komodo by smashing it's head repeatedly with a rock. Mr. Gris - Patrick's friend and ferryman. He takes Pat, Annie, and Victoria to the island. He apparently felt guilty about letting them go and attempts to find them. He ends up dead due to an infected Komodo bite. Annie - Pat's nannie? Aunt? I never picked up on her relation to him other than guardian. She ends up as Komodo fodder. Denby and Oates - Two guys on the island guarding the oil facility and taking care of the lizard problem. Denby has his throat ripped out, but lasts long enough to take out a Komodo. Oates wrestles with a Komodo and puts a iron pole through it's neck and shoots two others. He helps Patrick and Victoria escape the island.

CHARACTERISTICS:
Komodos are the world's largest lizard and, although normally sandy brown with dark spots, exhibit a wide variety of colour schemes which change with age and provide ideal camouflage. Komodos maintain a near constantly high body temperature by seeking out warm areas in the morning, cool areas during the day and often burrow during the night. They are quick and agile, have good eyesight, climb trees using their sharp claws and are good swimmers, swimming long distances when forced by the destruction of their natural habitat.
Komodos shed and replace their teeth, similar to that of sharks, which are serrated and ideal for tearing flesh from their prey.

The wild, dangerous, stealthy Komodo dragons....and the slow, fat ones that hung around the villages. the villagers would feed the dragons, they were extremely tame, or at least they looked it, can Komodo dragons truly be tame like this?
Trooper Walsh - Yes, They are just like people (but more intelligent), some are nice and others not so nice, they have good and bad days.

Komodo dragon lizard information
What is a Komodo dragon? Komodo dragons, or Komodo monitors, are actually lizards. They just happen not to spend much time in the water and are much larger than other lizards. They grow as large as six-feet long and can be fairly substantial in weight. They aren't generally very fast creatures, but their hunting strategies are based on power and size. Compared with lions and other carnivores, Komodos can eat larger bites of meat with each bite and waste no time in swallowing or chewing. The lizards tend to prey on animals like monkeys, goats, wild boars, and rodents. bodyOffer(1099) Komodos have four legs and prefer tropical climates. The reason there aren't many of them around is because young Komodos often end up as victims of prey to larger animals. However, if they can live past their fifth birthday, there's a good chance they'll be fine. Mating generally happens in the summer and males regularly get into fights over the females. When they fight, the Komodos lean back on the hefty tails for support as they grab each other's forelegs and attempt to wrestle the other to the ground. The most powerful get to breed. Why are Komodo dragons mysterious?

31. Behavior
komodos tend to be loners. They usually hunt and wander alone, but they feed as agroup. Each morning at about 530 am, komodos wake up and search for food.
http://www.k12.hi.us/~kapunaha/student_projects/komodo/behavior.htm
Behavior Komodo Dragons can be called "hunters" because they are always looking for food and getting into fights. Komodos tend to be loners. They usually hunt and wander alone, but they feed as a group. Each morning at about 5:30 a.m., Komodos wake up and search for food. They go to beaches to look for food. Sometimes they swim to nearby Indonesian islands because they can smell food in the wind, blowing from the other islands. They spend the whole day hunting for food in an area which they consider their territory. Komodos tend to fight with each other when other dragons come in to their hunting area. They are very protective of their territory. When they fight, they arch their necks and pop out their throats before they attack. Komodos will fight to the death. They will fight each other. They scratch and jump off each other, but they will not die unless they are biten. They kill their prey with the bacteria in their saliva. They will attack humans and other things if they are mad. They usually attack for food, females, or because they feel threatened by other smaller male Komodos. The Komodo Dragon has a very interesting feature. It has a third eye. The third eye is located on the top of the dragon's head, under s scale. It does not look like or act like the dragon's other two eyes. It faces the sky and acts like a light sensor. It cannot see like a regular eye. It senses light . It can tell a dragon the length of the day and the season of the year and the right time for mating.

32. Predators
It will attack anything edible that moves. komodos will even attack each other. komodosalso use their claws to defend themselves from bigger Komodo Dragons.
http://www.k12.hi.us/~kapunaha/student_projects/komodo/predators.htm
Predators and Prey Komodo Dragon have no enemies. They are the strongest lizards in the world alive today. It will attack anything edible that moves. Komodos will even attack each other. They first give out a warning by arching their neck and puffing their throat out. They then pin each other down. They will use their tail to defend themselves too. It will also use its teeth, claws, and third eye. Young monitors are well adapted to their arboreal life where their coloration is a useful camouflage. Their slender body, long tail, and sharp claws help them to defend themselves from other animals. Komodo Dragons have 60 teeth that are shed and replaced much like shark teeth. The teeth are flattened and rigid so that they can tear their food up into shreds. Komodo Dragons often ambush their prey by hiding along game trails. A Komodo Dragon then pins its prey to the ground and bites. If the animal escapes it will die of the bacteria in the saliva. Komodos also use their claws to defend themselves from bigger Komodo Dragons. They also use their claws to grab and rip their prey. Komodo Dragons eat the eggs of other lizards, mice, deer, wild pig, other lizards, and huge water buffaloes. Komodos are also known to kill people in the jungle when they are asleep. Komodos do not like to eat humans but they will attack and kill them. I found out that Komodo Dragons are on the top of of the reptile food chain. They are dangerous reptiles that can kill anything. So if you are in Indonesia BEWARE!

DVD review will follow upon movies release on the format. This creature feature, keenly awaited by The Hot Spot Team since reading of its production last year, finally saw its grand premiere in Paris. We were there throning the cinema along with multitudes of people to witness the Komodos taking their bow. Before starting the review and as part of some background it is important to point out that Komodo Dragons are not creatures of fantasy - in fact one called Fari lives just down the lane for us. They are in fact very much part of the animal kingdom today, inhabiting a small Indonesian island near Bali. And yes they do reach a length of 10 feet making them fearsome and formidable predators. The story sees Komodo eggs being dumped on a small island, we assume somewhere near mainland USA. Sometime later the eggs have hatched and the inhabitants have grown to their full size. They have also managed to devour a dog and the parents of a young boy right in front of his very eyes. As a result the boy suffers from post traumatic stress and in order to overcome this, his psychiatrist decides to take him back to the scene of the carnage.

Search for Asian movies and products! Creatures Attack Movies are not my cup of tea. I usually prefer Zombies Attack or Aliens Attack Movies to creatures any day. Why? Most of the time I find the "creature" in a Creatures Attack Movie to be, well, dumb. Take movies where the creatures in question are bats, bees, snakes, birds you get the idea. Some animals are just not scary enough to warrant being upgraded to "creature" status. This is the case with Komodo , a movie about giant Komodo dragons that run rampant on an island chomping on any human that crosses their path. That seems like a good recipe for a Creatures Attack Movie, doesn't it? Well let me tell you, it isn't.

These lizards live in one of the driest regions of indonesia with few permanent water sources

bring little moisture to the region....the trade winds which blow in from Australia also offer
little relief in the way of moisture. Temperatures in the Komodo National Park , range from a

This huge reptile, discovered in 1912, grows to lengths of 10 feet for males and slightly smaller for females. They weigh between 200 and 300 lbs. and reach sexual maturity in around 6 years.

I n mythic lore, the dragon is a huge, ferocious, terrifying creature. In real life, the dragon is a huge, ferocious, terrifying creature. And if you didn't believe there was a real-life dragon, you haven't met Varanus komodoensis, the Komodo dragon, a beast that may not actually breathe fire, but that otherwise lives up to its "dragonian" reputation. "Komodo dragons thoroughly enjoy eating people," says Carl Reiber, a physiologist in UNLV's department of biological sciences who studies the world's largest lizards. "They are predators, bar none. They tend not to be able to eat full-grown adults, but there are numerous occasions reported when these animals have attacked children." Komodos, which are found in nature on the hilly island of Komodo in Indonesia, stalk and ambush their prey- usually goats, sheep, and other small animals, but sometimes humans. "They don't usually take them down immediately; it's not like a lion that stalks his prey and grabs it by the throat, suffocating it or destroying blood vessels so that it bleeds to death. Komodos bite their victims, and these animals have foul mouths. They have a bacterial and fungal population in their mouths that is absolutely horrible." So when a Komodo bites its prey, it infects the animal, rendering it greatly weakened within 24 hours.

Komodo Dragons This is a wonderful creature that lives in the lowlands, grasslands, and palm trees of Indonesia, In these islands they're about 2,500-5,000 Komodos. With a weight of 200 pounds and a length of up to 8.6 ft. This is a picture of the Islands of Komodo, courtessy of www.starfish.ch. History- Komodo dragons go as far back as 250 million years ago where they were just small little monitors. But as time went on some monikers grew apart from others and migrated as Southeast as they could get and eventuly ended up some where in Europe and South Asia. As you would think komodos would be related to dinosaurs. But they aren't related, alligators and crocodiles are more related to dinosaurs. As shallow water came in the lizards started there journey, swimming and walking to North Australia where on there way stayed in Indonesia. The komodos in Australia died out and in Indonesia there was huge and bigger animals. So they evolved to being about 28 ft in length! That's one big lizard, it's the biggest in the world.
