4a. Komodo Dragon
The Komodo Dragon is the largest lizard found on Komodo Island,
part of Indonesia in the Indian Ocean. They have long sharp claws, greenish-black hide, forked tongues (used for smelling), and a hinged jaw like that of a snake. They are solitary animals but will group around a carcass to try and get a portion of a kill. During the mating season the male Komodo will make a kill and let the female eat from the carcass. After mating, the female goes off and digs a den in which to lay her eggs. The female lays around seven eggs. She will stay and protect them for several weeks, but will eventually wander off before they hatch. The eggs hatch around April and the little Komodos are 20 inches long and golden in color. They climb up in trees and stay for several years until they grow larger. They start coming down to the ground when they are around 3 feet long. They dig dens near riverbanks

Hi, gang. Well, lookee here. George is still draggin' the old "komodo" around the echo. Sheesh. I figured that in my 5-month absence, even that'd have the sense enough to lie down and die a well deserved death. Apparently not. In the latest batch of Garardian absurdity, George, in a message to Curtis, makes mention of a number of miscellaneous claims: 1. He claims to own 7 dictionaries. Fine, fine. But that begs at least two different questions; those being: (a.) his "Barney's Guide to Good Speaking English", "Dr. Seuss Dictionary and Pictionary", "The First Heavily Abridged Dictionary for Nescients" and "The How and Why Wonder Book of Big Words" are not exactly germane to this discussion (at least not on the sides of monitors worldwide opposite that from George), and (b.) he has never demonstrated that he has the intellectual horsepower even to understand those simplistic tomes. However, being in a charitable frame of mind this sunny morning, let's just let those pass without further comment and look at Georgie's central tenet:

Taken too soon from life of fun and football
By Greg Roberts and Kelly Burke October 16 2002 A sense of fun and a love of football persuaded Robert Thwaites to join a diverse group of Jakarta-based expats in forming an amateur rugby union team. But Saturday night's blast has robbed the ISCI Komodos of five players, including Queenslander Mr Thwaites, presumed dead. On Saturday night Mr Thwaites, 24, was in the first maxitaxi of a three-taxi convoy relaying Komodo players from a Kuta Beach restaurant to the Sari Club. As players left the first maxitaxi and walked towards the club, the bomb detonated. They took the full force of the blast. Mr Thwaites was one of three Australians in the taxi, with a Canadian and a New Zealander, believed to be a Jakarta-based schoolteacher, Jamie Wellington. A sixth injured player survived. None of their names has been released. Several players in the second taxi were injured. Everyone in the third cab, including Mr Thwaites's close friend, Steve Tanghe, was unhurt.

Rare and deadly Komodo dragon sets up lair at Tacoma's Point Defiance Zoo Friday, April 14, 2000 By CAROLINE ALLEN
SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER In a grassy lot at the entrance to the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, visitors come face to face with an enormous dragon. The 90-foot lizard is covered from horn to tail in blue and gray scales, and the neck is half the length of the body and holds up an angular head. Fire spews toward the ground between sharp and uneven teeth. The dragon's name is D'Artagnan. For centuries and across nationalities, dragons have held a place of deep fascination in the human psyche. They are fire-breathing devils or, as the Chinese believe, especially now during the Year of the Dragon, they are harbingers of good luck. Loki, a 7-1/2-foot Komodo dragon, is the star of the exhibit, "The Dragon's Lair," which opens tomorrow at Tacoma's Point Defiance Zoo

Stunning coastal vistas... Rinca's arid landscape is peppered with tall lontar palms,
standing like exclamation points punctuating gently rolling hills.

Ever imagine flying back in time to a Jurassic Park of the past? It's no fantasy. Bali may be the only place on earth where you really can fly back into time and wander with prehistoric beasts. The ages collide as you board a sophisticated, 21st century Amphibian Caravan aircraft and head to Komodo National Park, home of the dragons now-famed for gnawing on Sharon Stone's husband at the San Diego Zoo! Under the careful guidance of Komodo Park rangers, no recent visitors have encountered such dangers but most do get a close-up and personal encounter with Komodo dragons (varanus komodoensis). The park, an island and marine preserve east of Bali, lies between Flores and Sumbawa islands. Previously accessible only by a long boat journey, the park is now just hours away by sea plane.

On a few small islands in the Indonesian archipelago,
the world's largest lizard reigns supreme
by Claudio Ciofi A deer nimbly picks its way down a path meandering through tall savanna grasses. It is an adult male of its species, Cervus timorensis , weighing some 90 kilograms (about 200 pounds). Also known as a Rusa deer, the animal knows this route well; many deer use it frequently as they move about in search of food. This Rusa's home is the Indonesian island of Komodo, a small link in a chain of islands separating the Flores Sea from the Indian Ocean [see

http://www.szgdocent.org/cc/c-komodo.htm
KOMODO DRAGON
Varanus komodoensis
The Komodo Dragon is the world’s largest lizard.
The Land Of The Dragons: The conditions are far from hospitable. Steep hills, rocky ground and shallow soil make up the landscape of the dragons’ home. Fires and long droughts are common. Rain is sparse, averaging 800mm on a good year. Temperatures can reach 40-43degC after the dry season.
In the harsh environment of these islands, food is not easy to come by. Reptiles have the advantage in the race for the top predator status under these conditions because they have a much lower total energy requirement than mammals.
What does it eat?
The Komodo dragon is totally carnivorous and eat anything they can overpower. While smaller Komodos have to be content with eggs, lizards, snakes and rodents, the larger ones hunt deer, wild pigs, water buffalos and even horses. Komodo dragons are cannibalistic, and adults will prey on young ones as well as old and sick dragons. Other dragons may make up to 10% of a dragon's diet. There are few verified accounts of dragons actually attacking living humans to eat them, although like any other animal, they will attack in self-defence. VITAL STATISTICS
Size:
Males are 2.1m long, females 1.8m long; weight about 70kg. There are records of a captive male dragon growing to 3.13 metres and weighing 166 kg.
