ITC WILL CONDUCT FULL "SUNSET" REVIEWS CONCERNING
PORCELAIN-ON-STEEL COOKING WARE FROM CHINA, TAIWAN, AND MEXICO
AND TOP-OF-THE-STOVE STAINLESS STEEL COOKING WARE FROM KOREA AND TAIWAN
The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) today voted to conduct full five-year ("sunset") reviews concerning the countervailing duty orders on porcelain-on-steel cooking ware from Mexico (Inv. No. 701-TA-265 (Review)) and top-of-the-stove stainless steel cooking ware from Korea and Taiwan (Invs. Nos. 701-TA-267-268 (Review)), and the antidumping duty orders on porcelain-on-steel cooking ware from China and Taiwan (Invs. Nos. 731-TA-298-299 (Review)) and Mexico (Inv. No. 731-TA-297 (Review)) and top-of-the- stove stainless steel cooking ware from Korea and Taiwan (Invs. Nos. 731-TA 304-305 (Review)). As a result of today's votes, the Commission will conduct full reviews to determine whether revocation of the countervailing duty and antidumping duty orders on these products would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of material injury within a reasonably foreseeable time. The Commission's reviews in these cases will be completed no later than January 26, 2000, unless extended.

Talking washer, detergent-free unit, and a place where consumers can "test-drive" a washer or oven are among recent innovations.
The first-ever talking washing machine, the "Washy Talky" has been introduced by Stockholm, Sweden-based Electrolux. The chatty appliance speaks with a "warm female voice" in both English and Hindi. It uses a microcomputer to sense the weight of the wash load, and automatically decides the best wash program, required water level and wash time. It can also tell the user if an error has been made by saying things like "please close the lid." It can also voice simple instructions like "drop detergent, close lid and relax." The machine is fully automatic, top-loading and has a capacity of 6 Kg. Developed in India, the Washy Talky will be marketed under the Electrolux Kelvinator brand name there. It is not yet known whether the machine would be sold elsewhere.

The variety of Chinese cooking
Commenting on Paul Simon's account of donkey meat as food, I asked if there is anything the Chinese do not eat. Paul replies: "Of course, the Chinese have a saying about eating everything (they have a lot of "sayings" for a linguistic/phonetic reason but that's another topic entirely). "Fei Qin, Zou Shou, Shenme Dou Chi"Whatever flies the sky and walks the earth, it all may be eaten. This saying is quite ancient but the modern PRC version is, "Anything with legs except tables and chairs, anything from the sea except submarines, and anything that flies unless Being made it" (presumably Airbus and Antonov products are tasty). My theory is that during periods of famine, hungry Chinese citizens tried any bit of biomass around. Being great cooks, they found ways to prepare almost anything in a tasty fashion. I was recently in a squalid roadside eatery with some Chinese friends. They ordered a vegetable I'd never seen called "ho Pi Cai" (thick skin vegetable). They told me that, until the famines of the Great Leap Forward, they had regarded this plant as hog slops but later had tried it and found it good. Stir-fired with Sichuan peppers, it was quite delicious! I can hold audiences spellbound for protracted periods with tales of all the fried scorpions, turtle bile, snake blood, puppy penis, jellied camel hoof, etc. Dog-eating is another topic entirely. Dog isn't popular is all of China, but is in Manchuria and some south coastal regions. Its also popular in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Korea. Right now there is a huge controversy in South Korea about whether to classify dog as "livestock". Seoul has two English-language newspapers with websites (the

Human Diet Series: Korea by Sally Fallon and Mary G Enig, PhD I Koreans consume a wide variety of sea foods including shrimp, oysters, squid, crab, clams, abalone, snapper, cod, perch and whiting. Fish and shellfish are usually steamed, but are also eaten raw. Vitamin-D-rich shrimp sauce, made of tiny preserved shrimp cured in salty brine, is used in small amounts as a flavoring. Small dried shrimp are added to many dishes. Eggs are consumed as part of traditional dishes, such as egg custard, egg batters and egg pancakes, and not separately as a breakfast food. In fact, Koreans eat the same foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Enzyme-rich fermented foods are served at every meal, principally as kimchi, a spicy condiment made from cabbage, radish, cucumber and shrimp sauce. In the summer kimchi is made every day. Winter kimchi is usually made in autumn and is a project for the entire family. The kimchi is stored in large earthenware jars and buried in the ground, so that just the mouth of the jar is above the surface. A variety of other fermented foods can be found in Korean markets including pickled cucumbers, garlic, fish, crab, squid, anchovies, jellyfish, shrimp and many flavorful fermented sauces and pastes made from fish, shrimp, red beans and soy beans.
