Turkish drive to bridge distinct cultures Between 1996 and 1997, Sultan Ferah Akpinar was a Korean language and literature graduate student at Seoul National University (SNU). Yet the cultural barrier, along with numerous cold shoulders, nearly drove her to ditch her ambitious academic plans and return to Turkey, her homeland. "It was difficult for me in the beginning, because the other native students had trouble accepting me, a foreigner, as a colleague serious about studying their language," Akpinar said in Korean, in an interview with The Korea Herald. Sultan Ferah Akpinar hopes her newly published work will help Turkish people appreciate Korean culture. But today, she's vindicated herself. She has completed all her course work as a doctorate candidate and is a dissertation away from graduating. Her biggest accomplishment yet, she notes, is the publication of a Korean language text she translated into Turkish. With a translation grant offered by the Daesan Foundation, Akpinar was able to translate "Korean Language," the text co-written by one of her professors, Lee Ik-sup, at SNU. Published earlier this month by the Turkish publishing company Aydogdu, the text offers more than a careful translation of the original - it has invaluable references, explanatory notes and linguistic comparisons between Korean and Turkish specially added by Akpinar.
