The Korean Language Education Division (KLED) is comprised of the Department of Academic and Student Affairs, Research Department, Public Relations Department, and Administrative Office. The Division has approximately 40 faculty members including seven full-time senior Researchers. The KLED administers the Korean Language Program.
The Korean Language Program
The Korean Language Program (KLP) was first developed by the Korean Language Education Division of the LEI in 1969 to provide intensive Korean language training to foreign students admitted to Korean universities and others interested in Korean language and culture. Since then, over 7,000 students from over 70 countries have graduated from the KLP, and the program has grown to approximately 800 enrollments annually. Many of our graduates go on to play a vital role in companies and society by engaging in work related to Korea or the Korean language. The KLP has also expanded its scope to include courses designed to effectively expose students to Korean arts and culture and a Special Training Program for Korean Language Instructor is being launched this year.
Instructional Approach and Philosophy
The KLP integrates all language skill areas and emphasizes the development of practical language abilities through a rich assortment of engaging learning activities. Reflecting both cognitive and behavioral approaches to language learning, the KLP provides students with a structured yet flexible, fun, and creative learning environment with a strong emphasis on individualized attention. Recognizing the importance of culture in language learning, the KLP also incorporates cross-cultural education, giving students ample opportunities both to learn about Korean culture and to share their own.

Korean Language
The Korean people speak one language , an exclusive language of their own, which plays an important role in keeping a compatriotic feeling among the people. In modern Korean, there are several local dialects other than standard Korean, which is spoken in the capital and adjacent areas; however, there is not much difficulty in communication with one another.
In Korean, honorific or polite expressions are made using auxiliary words.
Hangul is the Korean alphabet, and it was invented in the 15th century under the reign (1418-1450) of King Sejong , the 4th King of the Chosun Dynasty.
Nowadays, many people around the world are learning Korean, and schools in various countries are teaching Korean in schools.

Korean Language Program First Year Korean I-II (Korean Language Courses) ASIANLAN 135-136 (Korean 101-102) This first-year sequence is for those who have no or minimal proficiency in Korean. Courses will introduce the basic structure of Korean while focusing on the development of reading, writing, and speaking skills. Class regularly meets five times a week two hours of lecture and three hours of aural/oral practice and daily attendance is expected. In addition, students are required to do additional hours of work for practice on their own in the computer lab. Through lectures, students will learn Korean characters, be able to read sentences with considerable fluency, and understand the basic grammatical structures of Korean. Based on the knowledge obtained through lectures, recitation classes will help the students develop an ability to use basic conversational expressions freely. The checkpoints for evaluation include homework assignments, weekly quizzes, reading aloud, and oral interviews. The textbook for the course is College Korean by Clare You (University of California Press). Those who successfully complete the course will gain sustained control of basic conversation.
