For Middle East, North Africa, Arab and regional information visit Arab Countries Kuwait , officially State of Kuwait, independent sheikhdom (1995 est. pop. 1,817,000), 6,177 sq mi (16,000 sq km), NE Arabian peninsula, at the head of the Arabian Gulf, bounded by Saudi Arabia (S) and Iraq (N and W). The capital is Kuwait. It is a sandy and barren country. With more than 10% of the world's estimated oil reserves, Kuwait is a leading exporter of petroleum and has used some of the enormous profits for social improvements. In the 1960s the government launched a program of industrial diversification, successfully introducing oil refining and production of natural gas and fertilizers. The population is predominantly Arab and Sunni Muslim, although only half the inhabitants are native-born. History
In the war’s wake, Kuwait concentrated on restoring its oil industry and on rebuilding the country. Parliamentary elections in 1992 resulted in the victory of a majority of the opposition candidates, but despite promises of democratic reform, the al Sabah family continued to dominate the government. In Oct., 1994, Iraq massed elite troops along the border with Kuwait, but it removed them when Kuwait and the United States moved forces into the area. Parliament was dissolved by the sheikh in May, 1999; new elections held in July gave Islamist and liberal candidates the most seats. Also in 1999, the sheikh issued an edict giving Kuwaiti women the right to vote and to run for office, but parliament failed to ratify it.

THE ARABIAN PENINSULA:
The eight nations flanking the Persian Gulf float on a pool of energy wealth. More than half the world's known oil reserves and one-fifth of the world's natural gas reserves are found here. These energy-rich nations have low populations and little industry, therefore they are willing to sell their resources to other countries. The first oil find in the Persian Gulf came in 1908 (Held 116) and was then developed by a British firm. After World War II, oil exploration by western firms began to intensify as did their interest in the strategic physical location of the region. Disputes grew over the way the wealth from the area's oil was distributed. Governments gave too much to the foreign owned oil companies. Leaders began wanting to gain control over the production and pricing of their nations' resources. The Persian Gulf countries decided that they needed more bargaining power in dealing with the oil firms. In 1960, they formed

Kuwait is bordered by Iraq to the north and west, Saudi Arabia to the south, and the Persian Gulf to the east. Due to a lack of arable land for agriculture, Kuwait's premium natural resource is its crude oil (10% of the world reserves). Petroleum accounts for 90% of Kuwait's export revenue and 70% of the government's income. The Answer:

At the close of the Gulf War in 1991, Iraqi troops set fire to hundreds of oil wells as they retreated from Kuwait. The intensely hot fires were visible from space. This daytime view taken in the spring of 1991 by astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle shows thick trails of black smoke rising up to 4900 meters (16,000 feet) into the sky. The capital, Kuwait City, lies just south of the two large smoke trails at top. Crews of firefighters from several nations worked for almost a year to put out the fires. The last fire was ceremonially extinguished by the Emir of Kuwait on November 6, 1991. Export of petroleum resumed within a year and Kuwait's economy is rebounding from the disaster.
