This independence was the culmination of nearly 14 years of civil war in which three insurgencies vied for control of Angola: the Movimento Popular de Libertacao de Angola (MPLA), the Frente Nacional de Libertacao de Angola (FNLA), and the Unizo Nacional para Independencia Total de Angola (UNITA). With the help of nearly 15,000 Cuban troops and massive aid from the Soviet Union, the Marxist MPLA defeated FNLA and UNITA in the Angolian civil war of 1975-76 and established a communist government in Angola.
