Make A Rain Stick for Kwanzaa
A percussion instrument is a musical instrument sounded by striking, shaking, or scraping. Examples are drums and maracas. People all over the world make the instruments from whatever materials they have available. For example, in some parts of South America people use cactus, while those in other areas, such as Africa, use gourds. The rain stick is a percussion instrument that makes a gentle, rain sound. Tribesmen have used the sticks for centuries to serenade the gods in hopes of making it rain. While you may not have access to dried cactus or gourds, you still can make a rain stick by recycling some common materials. We won't guarantee that playing the instrument will bring rain, but creating a rain stick is a great way to start your Kwanzaa celebration. The first step in making the instrument is finding just the right cactus branch and cutting it to size. Then it's hollowed out with a steel rod, and thorns from live cacti are pounded into the shaft in a spiral fashion. The stick is filled with small pebbles, and the ends are capped and sealed. To play the instrument, it's held by either end and tilted slightly. The pebbles trickle over the thorns, making the sound of gentle rain.
While you may not have access to dried cactus or gourds, you can still make a rain stick by recycling some common materials. We won't guarantee that creating and playing the instrument will make it rain, but you'll help save natural resources and divert solid waste from your landfill, helping to extend its life. With Kwanzaa approaching, making and playing rain sticks are great ways to celebrate.

Kwanzaa Crafts
Kwanzaa is a holiday that celebrates African-American culture. Kwanzaa lasts for seven days; it starts on December 26th, and ends on New Year's Day. The word "Kwanzaa" means "first fruits" in Swahili. Maulena Karenga, an African-American scholar and activist, founded Kwanzaa in 1966. Kwanzaa celebrates seven principles ("Nguzo Saba" in Swahili), including:
  • Unity (umoja), signified by the gathering of family, friends, and community
  • Faith (imani)
  • Purpose (nia)
  • Collective work and responsibility (ujima) - the commitment to the high ideals of the African community
  • Cooperative economics (ujamaa)
  • Self-determination (kujichagulia)
  • Creativity (kuumba)
Honoring the past (especially the history of Africa) and one's ancestors is central to Kwanzaa. On December 31, a Kwanzaa feast is enjoyed by family and friends. Maulana Karenga designed the feast to include the following:

Story of Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a celebration of African culture, heritage, and community which begins on December 26th and lasts for seven days.
Each day of the celebration a different principle is studied. The seven principles are: Unity (Umoja), Self-determination (Kujichagulia), Collective work and responsibility (ujima), Cooperative economics (ujamaa), Purpose (nia), Creativity (kuumba), and Faith (imani).

The seven Kwanzaa symbols are a mkeka (a mat), mazao (crops symbolized by fruits and vegetables), a Kinara (candleholder), muhindi (ears of corn repesenting children), zawadi (gifts given on the sixth day), the Kikombecha Umoja (the unity cup used each night of the celebration), and the Mishumaa Saba (the seven candles in the Kinara which represent the seven principles of Kwanzaa).
The colors of Kwanzaa are black, green, and red.

Black History Month / African American Section
Black History Month was established in 1926. Although there is an international aspect to Black History month, it is mainly an American holiday. In 1926, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson and other African American and white scholars, launched "Negro History Week" so that Americans could reflect on the history and contributions of African Americans. In the 1970s, the celebration of African American history was expanded to include the entire month of February. Black History Month should not be confused with a national holiday for African countries. African countries have their own national holidays at various times throughout the year. For example, Kenya's national holiday is on December 12th.

Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday that was created in the United States in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga to celebrate the Africam roots of black americans. It is a special time African American families set asideto celebrate and learn more about their ancestral African customs and history. The word Kwanzaa is Swahili for "first fruits of the harvest." The Kwanzaa Holiday Season starts on December 26 and lasts for seven days. Each day represents one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa. The colors of Kwanzaa are red, black, and green, the colors of the flag created by Marcus Garvey at the beginning of the twentieth century. The color red represents the african's struggle for freedom. Black represents all black people united, and green represents the bright future of all black people of the world.
