Geography
The Kyrgyz Republic is located in the heart of the Eurasian continent. The country occupies a strategic location on the Silk Road - between the markets of the former Soviet Union and Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, and China. Stretching 900 km from east to west and 425 km from north to south, Kyrgyzstan's total landmass is 199.9 thousand square kilometres, which is about the size of Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal combined. The northernmost part of the country is on the same latitude as Rome, and the southernmost end is on a level with the island of Sicily. The borders of the Republic generally follow natural boundaries - mountain ranges and rivers. Kyrgyzstan borders on Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the south, and China to the south and east. Kyrgyzstan is remarkable for its natural beauty. It is a country of sunshine, high snow-covered mountains, deep gorges cut by swift rivers and 1,923 mountain lakes. The country's generally mountainous terrain has an average elevation of 2,750 metres above sea level. Because of differences in elevation and degree of shelter, the climate of the Republic differs widely. In the summer months, travellers can spend part of a single day in a sunny valley, in a flowering meadow high in the mountains, and in glaciers above the clouds. Extensive mountain ranges featuring ridges, deep gorges, wide steppe valleys and virgin forests are complemented by more than 40,000 rivers and streams that provide irrigation and a vast potential for hydroelectricity production.

    Mountains
The Kyrgyz Republic is a mountainous country. Ninety-four percent of the country is over 1,000 m above sea level and about forty-one percent is over 3,000 m. An average elevation is 2,750 m; the highest elevation is 7,439 m; and the lowest is 401 m.  Colossal amplitudes of absolute heights, intricate relief, long geological evolution and other factors have determined the diversity of natural conditions and the abundance of natural resources. All native zones natural of the northern hemisphere can be found here, except tropical. Strong mountain ranges and vast closed and half-closed intermountain troughs different in their landscapes and economic use determine general appearance and natural peculiarities of the country. The most elevated part of the republic terrain is in its eastern borderland.  Here the mountain junction bordering China culminates at Tien Shan mountain system's highest points: Pobeda Peak (7,439 m) and Khan-Tengri (6,995 m). From here, the fan-shaped ranges ramify westwards and southwestwards to form isolated parallel chains stretching up to 400 km, mainly latitudinally. Heightsgodowninthesamedirection (from 7,000 mto 1,000 m). The highest and strongest ranges reaching 4,500 m-7,000 m are located in Tien Shan borderlands. These are Kashtaal-Too in southeast; Alai and Turkestan ranges in southwest; Talas and Kyrgyz ranges in northwest and north; Kungei Ala-Too in northeast. The southern border with Tajikistan lies along the Chon-Alay (Trans-Alay) Range where Lenin Peak (7,134 m), Kyrgyzstan's second highest point, is located.

    Geography of the Kyrgyz Republic
Between China and Central Asia there is a country, lifted by its mountains above the world. Tien Shan is the name given to the mountains by Marco Polo, a great traveller and merchant, who walked across the territory of the present-day Kyrgyzstan on the Great Silk Road. Kyrgyzstan is at the same altitude with Italy and only a little smaller in area. It will take one only 4 hours to fly to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, from Moscow, and not more than an hour from Tashkent and Alma-Ata. The climate is sharply continental. Summer is usually dry and sunny in the valleys, whereas it often rains in the mountains. Clear good weather lasts till December. There are thaws in winter and cold spells in spring and autumn. Kyrgyzstan ranks first in Central Asia in prospected coal reserves. Mining and processing of non-ferrous metals, such as antimony, mercury, tin, copper and others, is presently the focus of the ore-mining industry and it's prospects for the future. Wool processing and cotton growing occupy a conspicuous place in the economy of the republic.
