Kyrgyzstan, An Overview
Kyrgyzstan is a newly-independent republic of the former Soviet Union, nestled in the Tian Shan mountains next to China and Kazakhstan. About five million people live here, a little over half of whom are ethnic Kyrgyz, a Turkic relative of the Mongols. The cities have a very distinct Soviet taste. But dotting the countryside are the same sheep herds and yurtas that Ghengis Khan1s Mongol hordes saw as they rode through this land.

90. Kirgistan - Kyrgyzstan

http://www.kirgistan-reisen.de/
This side is made for traveller with modest requirements to comfort, but high requirements to intensive experiencing of culture and nature, for those, who look for the naturalness and for adventure and who wants to know fascinating humans of this region. Here you can find information about general travel conditions, accommodation and contacts in this rather unknown and in travel guides ignored area. And the goal is, that a few more traveller/individual tourists will come to the Kyrgyz villages, in order to do with their expenditures a small - however important - contribution for the improvement of the difficult income situation of the village inhabitants. Nearly all of the local people lost their work with the end of the Soviet Union and so they have no more a steady income. Many of them are however very much motivated, to gain income on new ways (e.g. by moderate tourism!). The idea to these Homepage is from Bruno de Cordier and Torsten Swoboda. They both lived in Kyrgyzstan (Kirgistan) and worked for different development assistance organizations. The information on the Website is the result of numerous trips throughout Kyrgyzstan (Kirgistan), which they partly undertook in their spare time, partly officially. All information is from own experience or from sources of first hand. Then the website was further developed with the support of Christoph Arndt (Germany, also working for several years in Kyrgyzstan), by Katja Wintermann and Matthias Hahndorf, two geography students from the Technical University in Dresden (Germany), who completed a practical course in Kyrgyzstan in summer 2000. The result was found under the name www.wandern-in-kirgisien.de in the Internet. A further, three-month journey led they, together with Uta Scheithauer (also geography student in Dresden), in summer/autumn 2001 again into the country of the Tienschan. The result is the available website www.kyrgyzstan-travel.net (German version under www.kirgistan-reisen.de). An end of our enthusiasm for this piece of central Asia is not to see...
