    Conceptualizing Academic Language
This report draws upon linguistic data from two fifth-grade bilingual classrooms, to show that academic language is comprised of various discourse-level features which are influenced by academic tasks. The authors discuss how students often have different interpretations than teachers regarding what styles of language are appropriate for carrying out certain academic tasks.
A variety of publications resulting from CAL's work with TESOL on the ESL Standards. Implementing Standards with English Language Learners: Initial Findings from four Middle Schools This report summarizes the findings of the first year of an innovative research project conducted in Lowell, MA. The study provides a detailed discussion of the professional development needs that have become the main focus of the work in Lowell thus far. This report is intended for those interested in the role standards play in the education of English language learners, and the influence standards have on professional development in public education generally. Integrating Language and Content: Lessons from Immersion This report highlights the findings from research in second language immersion programs in Canada and makes recommendations for designing and implementing integrated language and content programs and other types of second language instruction.

    Ilona Leki, Editor
The chapters in this volume explore the international role of written English in the academic context and clearly demonstrate how writing is integrated in all aspects of academic communication in English. Writing from all over the world, the authors address how teachers of nonnative-English-speaking students can bring educational content and life experience into academic writing programs and, in turn, how TESOL can be included in mainstream academic programs.
The 12 innovative programs described differ in context but share basic assumptions about how best to teach L2 writing. These programs assume that important intellectual development can occur in L2 writing classrooms.

Eighty common, practical words found in newspapers, magazines and texts are included. Twenty lessons each include four words, with 3 exercises for each word. Each of the 4 words in the lesson has from 4 to 10 definitions. Exercise 1 of each lesson has 10 sentences using the word in different contexts. The student identifies the correct usage of the word from the definition page. In exercise 2, the student matches parts of a sentence from 2 columns (10 sentences total). In exercise 3, the student writes the complete sentences formed in Exercise 2 and indicates the correct definition for the word as found on the definition page at the beginning of the lesson. An answer key is included at the back of the workbook for students who are capable of working independently; it also may be removed by the instructor.

    City Net
Travel to your favorite countries and visit parks, monuments, universities, or just about anywhere else of interest. Do you enjoy Antarctica, the Caribbean, or the Middle East? It's all in one place called City Net. Are you planning a trip abroad for your students? You will find everything from pictures of your favorite monument to information in the target language on the natural resources and art in your preferred country. This can be done with any age and any language level as most of the countries offer information in both English and the target language. Description: City Net is a great motivator. Upon linking, students can either select to view a listing of countries by clicking on the hypertext or type in the name of the place they would like to visit. Work your way through by selecting the country and city to which you would like to travel. Through these adventures your students are able to familiarize themselves with a variety of aspects of the countries chosen. Assign students to be travel agents and clients. They would put together a travel package that would suit the interests of their clients. In Geneva, Switzerland, for example, you can even get contact numbers for airlines and hotel information. Have students call or fax for information: there are local numbers for some of the airlines in your phone book.

Parents, taxpayers, students and teachers alike can arm themselves against the whole language con game by simply being aware of the ten alibis. After you know the alibis, you'll be able to recognize them wherever they're used - as is the case in much of the reproduced debates and press clippings in this section.
