Helping Your Child Learn to Read
A Parent Guide
Preschool Through Grade 3
Success in school starts with reading.
When children become good readers in the early grades, they are more likely to become better learners throughout their school years and beyond. Learning to read is hard work for children. Fortunately, research is now available that suggests how to give each child a good start in reading. Becoming a reader involves the development of important skills, including learning to:
  • use language in conversation listen and respond to stories read aloud recognize and name the letters of the alphabet listen to the sounds of spoken language connect sounds to letters to figure out the "code" of reading read often so that recognizing words becomes easy and automatic learn and use new words understand what is read
Preschool and kindergarten teachers set the stage for your child to learn to read with some critical early skills. First, second, and third grade teachers then take up the task of building the skills that children will use every day for the rest of their lives. As a parent, you can help by understanding what teachers are teaching and by asking questions about your child's progress and the classroom reading program. You can also help your children become readers. Learning to read takes practice, more practice than children get during the school day. This brochure describes what a quality reading program should look like at school and how you can support that program through activities with your children.

Telling stories to young language learners

Daniel Tierney

How do you keep learners spellbound while developing their listening skills? The authors provide guidelines on the type of stories that work well in the foreign language. They look at different ways of presenting stories, preparation for storytelling and follow-up activities.
Why storytelling? • Leading into the story • Are you sitting comfortably? • Developing the story • Linking the story to aspects of the curriculum • Some of the stories that have been successfully used to date • Theory into practice: Mr Gumpy’s outing

Information Sheet 8
Training to teach languages in adult and further education
INTRODUCTION In the past, it has been possible - indeed the norm - to teach modern foreign languages in the post-compulsory sector of education without a formal teaching qualification. However, this situation has now changed and from September 2001, all teachers on FE courses leading to a nationally recognised qualification (GCSE, AS, A Level) will be required to hold, or work towards and achieve in a specified time, a recognised teaching qualification appropriate to their role. All courses leading to an FE teaching qualification are to be based on the Further Education National Training Organisation (FENTO) standards and endorsed by FENTO. Either full or matched funding will be available to cover training costs. More details can be found on the FENTO website: http://www.fento.ac.uk It is highly likely that the requirement for a qualified workforce will be extended over time to cover all teachers of adults. Teacher training schemes are, therefore, more liable to change over the coming period than ever previously, as existing policy evolves and training standards are set. This information sheet does not therefore aim to provide an exhaustive list of courses available as it would become out of date very quickly. Neither does it set out to describe anything other than the present national picture, except in the case of certain courses offered in London on an intensive basis. Instead, this information sheet should be treated as a guide to reference sources and an aid to finding out what is available locally. It offers suggestions on how to go about finding an institution which offers a course leading to a teaching qualification. We have identified three types of course which may be on offer:

Using the Mother Tongue
Making the most of the learner's language Sheelagh Deller and Mario Rinvolucri,
ETp-Delta, 2002. Perhaps the most surprising thing about this book is the fact that there is a publisher willing, enlightened and brave enough to publish it. It's also worth noting that this publisher is not one of the market leaders. Thanks to publishers such as Delta we are now able to have books on the market which do not necessarily create big money, but do engender new ideas, attitudes and some risk-taking. This book applauds the use of the mother tongue when teaching a foreign language. It advocates a judicious use of the mother tongue in order to help learners understand and associate with the target language. The activities are designed to exploit the mother tongue for a particular purpose. The authors believe that the mother tongue is a resource that should not and cannot be ignored. However, it is not a resource to be used without a reason. To illustrate this the introduction is followed by a section entitled Advocating and Avoiding Mother Tongue. A simple example of using the mother tongue as a learning tool is the correction exercise in the grammar section. The teacher identifies the student errors they want to work on and writes correct sentences in English for each one. They then dictate these sentences in English but ask the students to write them only in Mother Tongue. The students then compare their MT sentences before translating them back into English. In this way they are forced to focus on specific detailed differences between their language and the target language.

NCREL Policy Issues
A Research-Based Analysis of Education Issues
About This Issue
Stable employment, academic achievement, and entrepreneurial success all depend on reading proficiency. Every American child has the right to the same opportunities for achieving success. Likewise, every teacher has the right to the in-depth training and support necessary to meet the challenge of developing America’s youth into proficient, literate citizens who will contribute to a global economy and a democratic society. Building teacher capacity and expertise in reading will better equip teachers to handle the challenges of the increasingly diverse, multicultural, and multiability needs of students. This edition of Policy Issues examines whether it is possible to fill the gaps that now plague the preparation of reading teachers and their ongoing professional development.

EDO-PS-90-1
Why can't all Americans just speak standard English? This plaintive question reflects the distress many citizens feel about the linguistic diversity in the schools. In many school districts, languages of Central and South America, Africa, and Asia mix with American dialects, creating classrooms in which communication is difficult. Across America, children are not learning essential lessons in school. In the next decade or two, the problem will become even more serious. Language-minority children will become the majority in public schools, seriously straining the capacity of those institutions. In a nation increasingly composed of people who speak different languages and dialects, the old notion of melting them together through the use of a common language is once again attractive. Requiring all children to speak the same language at a high level of proficiency would make the task of educating them a good deal easier. Unfortunately, what seems quite good in theory is difficult to put into practice. In this instance, the interrelationship of culture, language, and the children's development may make a common language difficult to obtain.
