History Relics suggest that humans have inhabited the area of present-day Laos since prehistoric times. However, the country's history really begins in the sixth century, when it was gradually inhabited by people from the Austro-Thai (also known as Tai) ethnic group migrating from Angkor and the area now known as Yunnan in southern China. Their loose group of communities eventually became the nation of Lang Xang, or "million elephants," under its first king Fa Ngum, with the support of the Khmer kingdom. The capital was established in Luang Prabang. In the 16th century, Vientiane grew in influence, and in 1563 King Setthathirat made it the capital of Laos. Setthathirat was a formidable man, and under him the country flourished, expanding its borders and adding several famous monuments to its landscape, including the That Luang stupa and Wat Phra Keo in Vientiane. Unfortunately, centuries of internal strife and external warfare were to follow. In 1575, the Burmese entered Vientiane and occupied it for 7 years, while Luang Prabang remained a separate kingdom. The country was reunited under King Nokeo Koumane in 1591 and was prosperous during the 17th century, but in the early 1700s the kingdom partially acceded to Vietnamese rule. Regions opposed to the rule seceded, leaving Laos in three parts: Luang Prabang, Vientiane, and Champasak. Towards the latter end of the century, the Siamese came in and conquered all three, virtually destroying the country, especially Vientiane, when Laos vainly tried to assert its independence under King Anou in 1827.

Shooting broke out in 1984 over possession of three villages. Another cause of tension between the two Southeast Asian neighbors was the ongoing Hmong Rebellion in Laos. The rebels used bases in Thailand and often crossed the border to attack the Communist Laotian government.

In the future, content will be added to this page. If you encounter any bad links, please email . Thanks! The conflict which most Americans know as The Vietnam War, also included civil wars in the neighboring nations of Laos and Cambodia. In both of these Southeast Asian countries, Communist forces overthrew the governments after long and bloody warfare. In Laos, an ethnic group known as the Hmong continued to fight against the forces of the new Communist government and its allies from Vietnam. This little-known war continues to this day. During America's long and painful time in Vietnam, the U.S. government recruited many Hmong into a secret army trained and armed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Following the fall of Saigon and America's desire to forget about our unsuccessful war in Indochina, U.S. aid to the Hmong ended, and they were left to deal with the Communist Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese on their own. They have resisted ever since. Below are some links to other sites with information on this war. More content will be added to this page in the future.

LAOS Laos / Laotian Kingdoms By Serge Kreutz In , after Laos had first been ruled by Khmers from Angkor, then by Thais from Sukhothai, Prince Fa Ngoum founds the Kingdom of Laos or "Lane Xang", as it was called at the time, as a sovereign state. Vang, a Sacramento travel agent and radio show host, is one of 10,000 American Hmong including several hundred from Sacramento who went back to Laos this year, despite fears that they will be mistreated for their role in the secret war against the communists from 1961-75. Here is his odyssey: Dec. 3: Lands in Vientiane, broadcasts arrival on Hmong radio to northern relatives. Dec. 6: Flies to Luang Prabang on Lao Aviation, whose motto is "every passenger insured." Dec. 7: Visits site south of Xieng Ngeun where he was once wounded by a communist bomb. Dec. 7: Tours mountain village where he rode buffalo and picked rice on weekends. Dec. 9: Flies to war-torn Xieng Khoang Province, sees hundreds of giant U.S. bomb craters. Dec. 10: Drives over bumpy roads to Udomxai, just misses elephant in road. Chasing dream back to Laos can be letdown By Stephen Magagnini Bee Staff Writer (Published December 31, 2000) VIENTIANE, Laos When Neng Chao Lor lived in Sacramento, he regaled his grandchildren with fantastic tales of his homeland. "He was a person who likes to tell you what life was like there, how they survived, and sometimes about the war," said his grandson, Tou Long Thao, a Kennedy High School student. Now, in a cool stone basement at the end of a dirt alley in the Lao capital, Lor, 74, fills his five young stepchildren with stories of his red 1970 AMC Matador and other wonders of life in America. "He tells us about America every day," says his stepdaughter, Mai, 17. "This morning he told us the U.S. has better schools, better living conditions, how when you turn 18 you can have your own car and go wherever you want ... everything is better in the U.S." Life has played a cruel trick on Lor.

to enlarge History While it is difficult to establish the history of this region prior to the Mongol invasions of the 13th century, it is nonetheless known that the Mekong valley has been inhabited for over 10,000 years. It is also believed that the Khmer kingdom had extended its domination over Laos from the 4th to the 10th century.
After the Mongol invasions the prince Fa Ngoum founded the kingdom of Lane Xang (kingdom of a million elephants) by unifying the many principalities that were formed when the Thais settled down in the region. Besides founding the first Lao state, this prince also introduced Theravada (Little Vehicle) Buddhism to the country. Following an agitated period, notably in the 15th century a.c. when the Vietnamese invaded and pillaged Louang Prabang, the Lane Xang dynasty reached its height of glory. Thus in the 17th century under the long reign of king Sulinya Vongsa the country realised its greatest territorial expansion. This is considered the Golden Age of Laos.
Towards the end of the 18th century and into the first half of the 19th century, the Burmese, Siamese and Chinese repeatedly invaded Laos.
