In its July 1997 Opinion , the European Commission expressed the view that, provided the necessary legislative amendments were pursued with sufficient urgency and were accompanied by the necessary structural adjustment of the industry, Latvia should be able to meet EU requirements in the audiovisual sector in the medium term. The November 1998 Report noted that Latvia had made progress in this field, such as the adoption of a new law on radio and television broadcasting. The conformity of the new law with Community provisions had not yet been assessed, however. The October 1999 Report noted the changes in the audiovisual sector in Latvia. However, despite the entry into force of amendments to the 1998 law on radio and television broadcasting, much remained to be done to ensure compliance with the Community acquis The November 2000 Report indicated that Latvia was continuing to adapt its legislation in line with the Community acquis . This alignment would have to be completed. The November 2001 Report highlights the progress made by Latvia in adopting Community legislation on audiovisual media and culture.

Germany has Christmas markets. But arguably the most well-known of Christmas traditions decorating the Christmas tree may have its origin in Latvia. And it's all but unknown. The story goes that in 1510, Martin Luther, a founder of the Protestant faith, was walking through a Rîga forest one evening. He came upon a fir tree whose branches glistened in the light of the moon and stars. Impressed by its beauty, he chopped down a smaller tree and took it home for his children. To recreate the moonlight, he fixed candles to the branches. With that, the first decorated Christmas tree in history was born. For lack of a better word, call the Christmas tree story a legend. It has been mentioned on CNN and there are countless references to it on the Internet (search for "Christmas tradition" and "Latvia"). It appears in books on the origins of Christmas trees.

At the Pure Horticultural Research Station the general objectives are the testing of newly introduced cultivars and breeding; and the development of propagation systems for healthy strawberry plants. Among new cultivars the interest is focused on Istochnik, Desnanka, Korona, Sjupriz Olimpiadi and Roxana. In special trials, healthy micropropagated plants of the cultivars Senga Sengana and Festivalnaja have yielded 180% to 220% of traditionally propagated plants. Welcome!! These words of the writer Rudolfs Blaumanis (1863-1908) , engraved on his statue in the center of Riga, speak more to our love of Latvia and of our Latvian heritage than any others: Mans Zelts ir Mana Tauta,
Mans Gods ir Vinas Gods My Gold is My People,
    My Honor is Their Honor
We want to impart that love and passion to you by sharing our experiences and personal perspectives, and to give you a feel for Latvia, both its people and its land. If you've "grown up Latvian," wherever that may have been, you may recognize much that's familiar. If not perhaps you're investigating your Latvian heritage or you're just curious about Latvia you'll find that the Latvian identity is intensely felt. The Latvian culture symbols, myths, songs, beliefs, language is remarkably rich and ancient, offering glimpses at the very roots of Indo-European civilization. That the Latvians have preserved both themselves and their culture over the centuries in the face of inestimable odds is a tribute to both the people and the powerful calling of their heritage. It calls to us and it may to you, as well!

Baltics: Attitudes Toward Russian Culture Differ In The Three States
By Valentinas Mite The Baltic states regained their independence in 1990 following 50 years of occupation by the Soviet Union. Russification was an official policy of the Soviet Union. Twelve years later, what are public attitudes in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia toward Russia? Is the influence of Russian culture felt in everyday life? Prague, 23 April 2002 (RFE/RL) The influence of Russian culture is still felt strongly in everyday life in the Baltic states, though the official policy of the three countries is strongly pro-Western. Russian TV channels are widely watched in all three countries; Russian popular music is played in Lithuanian and Latvian cafes and restaurants; and some Russian-language newspapers remain available and popular, especially in Latvia. But experts say the way in which Russian culture is received differs among the three. In Lithuania, attitudes toward Russian language and culture remain relatively positive. Of the three Baltic countries, Lithuania has the smallest percentage of ethnic Russians. The majority of Russians became citizens in 1989 and are now more or less integrated into Lithuanian society. Rasa Alisauskiene works for the Gallup organization, which surveys popular attitudes. She says polls show Lithuanians have mostly positive attitudes toward Russians. She attributes this to the fact that Russian is still widely understood and that other foreign languages with the exception of English among young people have not made many inroads.
