A Businessman's Guide to Dubai Setting up businesses in Dubai In the UAE, economic activity is regulated by individual emirates as well as the Federal Government. In Dubai, the authorities have deliberately sought to create an environment which is well ordered without being unduly restrictive. As a result, Dubai offers businessmen operating conditions that are among the most liberal and attractive in the region. There are many options open to international companies seeking to establish a business relationship with Dubai. Apart from forming a trading relationship, for many companies there are distinct advantages in being on-the-spot to research market prospects, make contacts, liaise with customers, and see through the details of any transactions and orders secured. Having a presence can provide considerable business advantages in the Middle East. Businessmen in the region prefer to deal with someone they know and trust and personal relationships are much more important in doing business in the Arab world than they are in western Europe or America. Also, the buying patterns of some countries served by Dubai tend to be unpredictable, creating a need for first class market intelligence and information. Licensing The basic requirement for all business activity in Dubai is one of the following three categories of licences:

What's New Faculty Staff Courses ... Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Courses Currently Taught: Business Law This is an introductory course designed to help business students acquaint themselves with the framework of Singapore's legal system and to understand the legal environment within which businesses operate. A substantial part of the course is dedicated to the study of basic contractual principles as these principles constitute the foundation of virtually every area of commercial law. In addition, students will study the various types of legal liability (principally, tortious and statutory) which arise in the conduct of business; basic concepts relating to intellectual property law; as well as common forms of business relationships. To ensure that students are also equipped to face the challenges as well as exploit the opportunities presented by the current e-revolution in commerce, the course also requires students to understand and analyse new legal issues arising from the conduct of businesses through electronic media. Company Law Ethics and Social Responsibility Information Technology and The Law Information Technology in its various forms in an inevitable and given fact of life. In a vast and literally borderless world, it is nevertheless clear that rules and principles of law still play an important role. One major challenge is to adapt existing rules and principles of law to a radically new context and economy. Indeed, in a certain instances at least (and as we shall see), wholly new rules and principles have had to be developed.

Litigious law firm branches into Naples
Monday, March 19, 2001 JOHN HENDERSON, jfhenderson@naplesnews.com A Miami law firm that has come under heavy criticism for filing hundreds of lawsuits on the east coast of Florida against business owners has expanded its litigation zone into Naples. "They've got a very bad reputation," said U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, R-West Palm Beach, who this week is again proposing legislation giving business owners 90 days to fix alleged ADA violations before a lawsuit can be filed and law firms such as Mallah's demand business owners pay legal fees as part of a settlement. "It's nothing more than a set-up," Foley said. "They (Mallah's firm) keep moving to new areas. They are lining their pockets and are not interested in disabled. They are interested in fixing their incomes.

The treaty models of the OECD serve as the basis for most existing tax treaties worldwide. Taking them as a starting point, the lecture aims to provide the necessary understanding for a systematic approach to the legal field of tax treaties in general. It discusses basic issues such as the scope of tax treaties, their distributive rules and the methods available to eliminate double taxation, as well as other important treaty rules, including the prohibition of discrimination, the mutual agreement procedure and the exchange of information. On the one hand, the lecture is intended to create a basis for various, more specific lectures, and on the other to develop an understanding of the interrelations between individual treaty rules that are also dealt with in other lectures. The Law of Cohesion This is one of the branch laws of the cosmic Law of Attraction. It is interesting to notice how this law demonstrates in this Love-System in a threefold manner:
  • On the plane of the Monad , as the law of cohesion, the law of birth, if we might use that term, resulting in the appearance of the Monads in their seven groups. Love the source, and the Monad of love, the result. On the plane of buddhi , as the law of magnetic control. It shows itself as the love-wisdom aspect, irradiating the ego, and eventually gathering to itself the essence of all experience, garnered, via the Ego, through the personality lives, and controlled throughout from the plane of buddhi. Magnetism, and the capacity to show love, are occultly synonymous. On the astral plane , as love demonstrating through the [577] personality. All branches of the law of attraction, demonstrating in this system, show themselves as a force that ingathers, that tends to coherence, that results in adhesion, and leads to absorption. All these terms are needed to give a general idea of the basic quality of this law.
This law is one of the most important of the systemic laws, if it is permissible to differentiate at all; we might term it the law of coalescence.

SOLVING THE EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CRISIS by Janice J. Heiss May 18, 2001 Leading Java TM technology developers James Gosling and Greg Bollella were in fine form when delivering their keynote address on April 11, 2001, at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco. They argued that a crisis related to software complexity currently exists in embedded computing that could be solved through the use of the Real-Time Specification for Java (RTSJ). About James Gosling and Greg Bollella James Gosling, the original designer of the Java TM programming language, is a vice president and fellow at Sun Microsystems, Inc. Greg Bollella works as senior staff engineer at Sun Microsystems Laboratories, where he is active in the development of the Real-Time Specification for Java TM (RTSJ). He also participates in the Real-Time for Java Expert Group under the Java Community Process SM program. Bollella described how, in 1998, he heard a speaker claim that GUIs would soon be everywhere, and that the world needed a real-time system with the capability to easily write user interfaces. Bollella then began a three-year crusade to accomplish this.
The Growth of Software Complexity
According to Bollella, software is inevitably growing in complexity, for several reasons:
