WHO WE ARE
T he Center on Law, Ethics and National Security was founded at Duke University's School of Law on September 1st, 1993, by Robinson O. Everett, a professor of law at Duke and a former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. As an integral part of the Law School, the Center encourages and sponsors teaching, research and publications concerning national security law topics, and also conducts conferences and seminars in the national security field. Additionally, as the Center's name implies, it also seeks to provide a legal focus on national security issues from an ethical perspective. The Center on Law, Ethics and National Security is privately funded, drawing its financial support from foundation grants and other donations. OUR COMMITMENT TO TEACHING
The wide range of topics and issues which fall under the rubric of national security law continues to expand in virtually geometric proportions, and events that capture daily headlines or become the lead stories on the nightly news continue to have a dramatic effect upon national security decision-making.
We have witnessed the same intensity of growth in the teaching of national security law. In 1984, there were but seven law schools in the country that offered a course in national security law, but there are now almost 100 schools that provide such an offering.

Where can I find out about the law schools?
Information about law schools, including application procedures and handouts with helpful hints are available in the Undergraduate Advising Center. You will also find surveys of many law schools (in red binders in the library). These surveys, filled out by Stanford alums currently enrolled at a particular school, give valuable "insider" information about faculty, courses, and resources. In addition, many law schools have web sites that describe the school in detail. The UAC publication "Is Law School for Me" contains a list of web sites judged helpful to prelaw students. Where can I find out about the legal profession?
The Career Development Center has information about the legal profession, and offers opportunities to spend time with Stanford alums who are practicing lawyers. The Official Guide to US Law Schools, available in bookstores, also has information about the profession (several copies available for use in the UAC in Sweet Hall). The Alumni Association offers a mentoring program that includes many lawyers who have volunteered to advise Stanford students interested in the profession. Is law school for me?

As published in Diversity Challenged POLICY ACTION Court Decisions Faced with two lawsuits ( Grutter v. Bollinger and Gratz v. Bollinger , the University of Michigan has fought vigorously to maintain race/ethnic considerations in their admissions processes. In the spring of 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in both cases that will profoundly impact the future of affirmative action in higher education. RESEARCH Diversity Challenged In this book published in 2001, researchers and policymakers discuss substantial developing evidence showing that diversity of students can and usually does produce a broader educational experience, both in traditional learning and in preparing for jobs, professions, and effective citizenship in a multiracial democracy. AN APPEAL TO THE DEANS OF LAW SCHOOLS WORLDWIDE
"International law, only yesterday a seemingly quiet backwater in human affairs, is reaching into hitherto unimagined fields. The nations of the world have acceded to an unprecedented number of agreements in virtually all branches of human activity - from the ocean floor to the planet's climate to outer space - in only the last forty years. There has been a truly astonishing growth of public international law which will accelerate into the coming century. The pressing need for an international system based on law has never been so evident."
Dear Colleague, This message at the dawn of the new millenium should reach you through the Legal Adviser of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of your country or through some other channel. Irrespective of how it has found its way to you, I ask you to take a few minutes of your busy time to read it. The message concerns you in your capacity as Dean of a Law School, and the decision you will make after reading it will be of great importance for all those who study and will study law at your institution and for whose education you bear a responsibility. As it appears from the quotation, international law has become an ever more important ingredient in the finely spun web that connects us all both within countries and across borders. New dimensions have been created through cyberspace, and the Internet makes it possible for people to communicate all around the globe in a matter of seconds.
