The First organized Church of the Brethren on the Pacific Coast. This history was written in 1909 by an unknown author. In the year of 1850 three members crossed the plain with an Ox team from the state of Indiana, and located near each other in the eastern part of the Willamette Valley, Oregon, then a territory. Their names were, Benjamin Hardman, Sr., a deacon, Samuel Hardman and his wife, Mary. In the years of 1853-4 twenty more members crossed the plains with ox teams. They came from different States, and also settled in the Willamette Valley. Their names were Joshua Hardman and his wife Anna; David Peebler (Deacon) and his wife, Susan; Philip Baltimore and his wife, Mary; Jacob Wigal (Deacon) and his wife, Nancy; Aaron Hardman and his wife, Annie; John Wigal and his wife, Catherine; John H. Ritter and his wife, Elizabeth; Daniel Leedy (minister) and his wife, Mary. In those days it was a perilous trip to cross the plains, as nearly the whole way was infested with wild Indians; from the Missouri River to the Willamette River in Oregon. Sometimes along the Platte River would be seen a great herd of buffalo coming on a full run, and sometimes it was difficult to keep then from running over the emigrants wagons and teams.

    History and Government
History: The Lebanon, over the course of history, provided an inaccessible haven for tribes and religious groups escaping from repression and persecution in other parts of the Middle East. The principal groupings in the country are: the Maronites, Christians who - uniquely among Eastern Christians - maintained links with, and secured support from, their co-religionists in Europe; the Greek Orthodox Christians; the Shia Muslims, who arrived in Lebanon to escape persecution from the Sunni majority elsewhere in the Islamic world; and the Druze, a heretical Muslim sect founded in the tenth century. The colonial powers that subsequently occupied Lebanon - the Ottoman Turks and the French - were content to leave these sects more or less to themselves.
The Turks took control of the area in the 16th century during the major expansion of the Ottoman Empire and remained there until the end of World War I. With the dissolution of that empire, the French were granted a League of Nations mandate to administer Lebanon until independence in 1941. From that time the disparate communities cohabited in relative peace with political power divided between Christians, Shia and Sunni Muslims. On this basis, Lebanon developed a thriving economy based on providing business services - banking and finance, transport and trade facilities - for other countries in the region. This situation prevailed until the 1970s when the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), which had been expelled from Jordan in 1971, established itself in Lebanon with the tacit agreement of the Lebanese.

    71. The Syrian Occupation Of Lebanon - Mordechai Nisan
Overview of the history of the occupation, and political considerations.
    http://www.gotc.org/syrian_occupation_of_lebanon.htm
The Syrian Occupation of Lebanon Mordechai Nisan Executive Summary The struggle of Lebanon to preserve its national identity and political independence has, in particular, faced the hegemonic ambition of Syria. Since the 1970s, Damascus has succeeded to implement an incremental, yet systematic policy of occupation over Lebanon that has transformed the political, social, and economic character of the country. The Syrian occupation, calling it by its proper appellation, was consummated in 1989 with the Taif Accord and in 1990 with the removal of General (and Prime Minister) Michel Aoun from the Ba’abda presidential palace and with the full conquest of Beirut, Lebanon’s capital. Syrian occupation employed a wide range of policy means to transform Lebanon into a “client state” and a Syrian political satellite. By means of military control and political penetration, media repression and alien colonization, Lebanon has lost its independence. Under foreign rule within the matrix of a foreign-manipulated police state, the Lebanese suffer from Arabization and Syrianization that deny the people, especially the Maronite Christians, their freedom and dignity. Many have been forced into exile across the countries and continents of the Lebanese diaspora. Syria’s occupation regime in Lebanon suggests comparison with the Anschluss of 1936, the Munich capitulation of 1938, and the setting up of the Vichy regime of 1940. Stalinism as a terror state model is also evocative of Lebanon’s pitiful subjugation about which, however, the international community shows hardly any concern.

    History of Lebanon
(Redirected from Lebanon/History Lebanon is the historic home of the Phoenicians , Semitic traders whose maritime culture flourished there for more than 2,000 years (c.2700-450 B.C.). In later centuries, Lebanon's mountains were a refuge for Christians, and Crusaders established several strongholds there. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I , the League of Nations mandated the five provinces that had comprised present-day Lebanon to France . Modern Lebanon's constitution, drawn up in 1926, specified a balance of political power between the various religious groups. The country gained independence in 1943, and French troops withdrew in 1946. Lebanon's history from independence has been marked by periods of political turmoil interspersed with prosperity built on Beirut's position as a regional center for finance and trade. In 1958, during the last months of President

It was decided that this eastern section of the Sea will be called the Levant . So, everyone can call the Lebanese Levantines just like the Greeks and the Egyptians. It is bordered by Syria in the North and East, by Israel in the South, and the Mediterranean Sea in the West. Site Index BLHC Home Mission History ... Senior Management The Hospital An Integrated Health Care System Embracing the Community with Superior Care. It would be impossible to retell the countless acts of selfless and extraordinary service that generations of hospital employees have demonstrated over the past century. Still, the events that make up Bronx-Lebanon's rewarding history reveal a profound story - one of a hospital founded on an unwavering commitment to meet the needs of its community. In 1962, the Lebanon Hospital (incorporated in 1890) merged with the Bronx Hospital (incorporated in 1909). Just nine years later, the hospital took
a significant step toward training the doctors of tomorrow, by becoming an affiliated primary teaching hospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In the early 1980s, the problems of the inner city and a prolonged recession had an impact on Bronx-Lebanon. The hospital had a negative net worth, and was fighting for survival. An important event that signaled a new era was the completion of 'New Directions" in June 1987. This $181 million modernization project resulted in the replacement of an aging physical plant with state-of-the-art facilities. In addition to New Directions, numerous other major initiatives were launched by the hospital's leadership, including education, housing nutrition and medical outreach programs, which further integrated Bronx-Lebanon into the fabric of the community.
