Home History - City of Lebanon Lebanon was officially established on April 30, 1830, following action from the Indiana General Assembly. Lebanon was selected as the county seat later in 1832. In tradition, Lebanon was founded on May 1. This tradition, though well authenticated, is mistaken, as is the assertion that Lebanon was founded in 1831. Lebanon was founded by two young, prominent, Indianapolis men, General James Perry Drake and Colonel George L. Kinnard. Their military titles were derived from their service in the Indiana Militia. Both men, in addition to being progressive community builders were shrewd developers and speculators. Drake and Kinnard learned early of the planned organization of Boone County and purchased three tracts of land near the geographic center of the new county. The two men knew that this location would be the most likely site for the new county seat and, therefore, would develop as a town. According to Federal Land office records in Crawfordsville, on March 1, 1830, Drake and Kinnard applied for deeds to the land. It is believed that the purchase price was $1.25, per acre, the going rate for property in the area. With the land acquired, it is reasonable to assume that the two men set about platting a town. This "Original Plat" consisted of over 19 blocks surrounding the public square. To ensure that the town would flourish, Kinnard, as Marion County surveyor, surveyed a road from Indianapolis to Lafayette. This road as it lead northwest from Indianapolis through the wilderness would have passed to the west of Lebanon had it not been for an expedient eight block jog to Main St. before continuing on to Lafayette.

Exhibits: A Brief History of Lebanon Excerpts from the 1993 Master Plan Much of Lebanon has a natural definition consisting of two distinct northern New England towns nestled in valleys rich in natural and human history. This landscape provides a clearly-definable "sense of place." The Mascoma and Connecticut Rivers meander through or alongside the City with quiet waters and stretches of turbulent waters. The Mascoma River serves a dual role of linking the eastern and the western ends of the City and of partitioning the north from the south. The Connecticut River serves as a landmark that defines the City limits on the west and ties the northwest section of Lebanon with the southwest corner. Lebanon is characterized by ridgelines surrounding the bottomlands of these rivers. In the Mascoma basin, Crafts Hill, Quarry Hill, Signal Hill, and Mount Tug form the northern rim, while Bass Hill, Storrs Hill, and Farnum Hill define the southern boundary of the valley. Mount Finish, Bald Hill, Crafts Hill, and Colburn Hill define the eastern rim of the Connecticut River Valley. These prominences trend on a north/south axis and give Lebanon's terrain a strong, undulating form. These major ridgelines and especially certain prominences such as Storrs/Farnum Hill, Mount Support, Mount Tug, and Signal Hill lend natural definition to the City. In this natural setting Lebanon took form resulting in its present cultural landscape. The City's early use of land resembed the historic European development pattern that is, a dense urban center surrounded by agricultural uses and forested open spaces. Two such urban centers now exist, one in central Lebanon and the other located in western Lebanon. It is within these areas that the commercial, civic, and dense residential land uses emerged and continue to function.

Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, the five Ottoman provinces that had comprised present- day Lebanon were mandated to France by the League of Nations. From the end of the term of Amine Gemayel in September 1988 until the election of Rene Moawad in November1989, Lebanon had no president. The terms of the first two presidents ended in political turmoil. In 1958, during the last months of President Chamoun's term, an insurrection broke out, aggravated by external factors. In July 1958, in response to an appeal by the Lebanese Government, U.S. forces were sent to Lebanon. They were withdrawn in October 1958, after the inauguration of President Shihab and a general improvement in the internal and international aspects of the situation.

Since the turn of the century excavations of the ancient port cities of Lebanon have at last enabled us to learn more about the daily life and customs of this people who at one time controlled the trade routes of the ancient world.

The area became the centre of Palestinian political and military operations when Palestinian guerrilla forces were expelled from Jordan in 1970-1 following clashes with the Jordanian Arab Legion. Raids across the Israeli border by Palestinians from southern Lebanon became more frequent. In March 1978, 20,000 Israeli forces invaded and occupied south Lebanon and established a "security zone" following repeated incursions into Israel from southern Lebanon by the Palestinian National Liberation Movement, the PLO's guerrilla movement. Under pressure from the UN Security Council, Israel withdrew from the territory, but transferred control of a border strip to the pro-Israeli Christian militias in Lebanon. The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 425, which called for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from south Lebanon and established a UN Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil), to maintain peace across the border. Israeli invasion The security zone is three to six miles wide Despite the 1978 attack, and the deployment of Unifil, Palestinian guerrilla forces succeeded in re-establishing a military presence in southern Lebanon. Border clashes increased. On June 6 1982 Israeli troops invaded Lebanon, in an attempt to remove the PLO military threat to Israel's northern border.

History King George III of England formally signed the Charter for the Town of Lebanon on July 4, 1761, and colonist began settling the area almost immediately. DeirElQamar not only preserves its grand feudal architecture, but its old stepped streets, walled gardens and picturesque corners as well. Shortly after Emir Fakhreddine II came to power in 1590, a chronic water shortage in Baaqline forced him to move his capital to DeirElQamar. There he ruled until his death in 1635. The town remained the residence of the governors of Lebanon until until the 18th century, when Emir Bechir II Chehab moved the capital to Beiteddine. Dany Chamoun Square formerly known as Midane The Huge public square or midane , which was originally used for jousts and other equestrian contests, is surrounded by historic buildings.
