Lesotho
History
People described as Sotho have lived in Southern Africa since at least the 10th century AD, moving throughout the high veld of the region. By the 16th century, the Sotho people had arrived in the area known now as Lesotho, marrying and intermingling with the Khoisan people, and forming small chiefdoms. Extensive trade links were established between the groups, as well as with outside people. Grain and hides, for example, were traded for iron from the Transvaal area. By the early 19th century white traders were on the scene, exchanging their ever-reliable beads for cattle. In came the Voortrekkers (Boer pioneers), and suddenly the people of the area, now called Basotholand, had to recognise that constant expansion for 300 years was placing extreme pressure on the environment. At the same time, consolidation and expansion of the Zulu state was causing a chain-reaction of violence throughout Southern Africa. Survival by the loosely organised southern Sotho society is attributed to the strong leadership of Moshoeshoe the Great. The Basotho emerged as a people around 1820 when Moshoeshoe the Great gathered the tribes scattered by Zulu raids and established a stronghold at Butha-Buthe, and later on the mountain of Thaba-Bosiu, about 30km (20mi) from what is now Maseru. By 1840 his people numbered about 40,000. Worried by the Boers, Moshoeshoe the Great enlisted British support, but the British were equally worried about Moshoeshoe, and launched an unsuccessful attack on him. When the English left defeated, the Boers pressed their claims to the land, leading to the 1858 Free State-Basotho War (won by Moshoeshoe) and another in 1865 (in which Moshoeshoe lost much of the western lowlands). In 1868, under increasing pressure from the Boers, Moshoeshoe placed the region under the protection of the British government, but as part of the deal, lost even more land to the Boers.

From about the 16th century, African farmers, the ancestors of the present population, moved across the grasslands of southern Africa and settled in the fertile valleys of the Caledon River, where they came to dominate the San hunters of the region. These stock-keeping agriculturalists belonged to the large Sotho group and were divided into numerous clans.

HISTORY OF MEMBERSHIP The continent's position as a crossroads between the Americas, Europe and Asia also lays it open to transnational crimes such as traffic in weapons, illicit drug trafficking, illegal immigration, traffic in stolen motor vehicles and fraud, etc., which can only be stopped by international co-operation. Seeking and locating the criminals involved poses problems relating to information exchange, international identification and arrests with a view to extradition. This is why Interpol (in accordance with Article 2 (1) of its Constitution) ensures the closest possible co-operation between the "criminal police authorities" of all member countries, including those in Africa. Crime is not associated with a particular region and is certainly not a problem for Africa alone. Ever since it was established, the International Criminal Police Organization - Interpol has been seen by countries all over the world as an institution whose principles and objectives correspond to universal aspirations for human rights, public safety and the fight against ordinary law crime. Joining Interpol was therefore one of the first steps taken by various African leaders once their countries obtained independence.

The Kingdom of Lesotho, or Basutoland, as it was known through most of the 19 th and 20 th centuries, owes its origins largely to the genius of Paramount Chief Moshoeshoe I (1786-1870). During Southern Africa's chaotic 1820s and 1830s he asserted his control over a growing nation of Sotho-speaking people. By the 1830s, the name Basutoland was increasingly well known, and French missionaries began their work there under Moshoeshoe's protection, bringing literacy, modern agricultural and building techniques, and the arts of medicine and diplomacy.
It was only in 1950 that the first minor concessions were made to the elective principle in Basutoland, though the British still refused to concede legislative powers. In the background, however, rapid social, economic and political change was under way, not merely in Basutoland, but in South Africa too. As the self-confidence of educated commoners grew, they began to take a more prominent role in Basutoland, to a great extent displacing the chiefs as the backbone of society.
In 1952 Ntsu Mokhehle established the Basutoland African Congress (later renamed the Basutoland Congress Party BCP), to agitate for immediate self-government, and against the racially-discriminatory practices filtering across the border into Basutoland.

COSAFA CASTLE CUP HISTORY
This year marks the seventh year of the Cosafa Castle Cup and again brings with it the excitement and anticipation of yet another round of the regional challenge. Since 1997, the tournament has kept the southern African region on the edge of their seats as the members of the Council for Southern African Football Association have battled it out to prove their supremacy. Four countries have already been able to win the trophy and add a major international title to their list of accomplishments. The Cosafa Castle Cup certainly now enjoys a wide profile, well beyond the borders of its member countries. Live television coverage, unprecedented for a competition of this nature, takes the event into the homes of people right throughout Africa and also into Europe and South America. The tournament is one of a kind on the international calendar, given that no other regional event can boast a longevity or as wide a reach as the Cosafa Castle Cup.
