It is true that diet plays a big role in most cancers as does heredity. However, with leukemia, diet has not been shown to be a factor.

Cancer
My father has pancreatic cancer and someone sent me an e-mail saying that vitamin B 17 is the cure for cancer, but that the FDA has banned this . Do you know anything about this? Would you please help me? Or try to send me in the right direction? Thank you in advance for anything you might be able to offer.
There is no such vitamin B 17. Unfortunately the FDA does not regulate supplement companies and they can still make wild, outlandish health statements. Recently, legislation was pending to prevent this, but thanks to deep pocketed supplement company lobbyists, the legislation was greatly weakened. Often, I don't even recognize the ingredients on labels of supplements as being a nutrient for which there is a substantiated need for by humans. I would encourage your dad talk to a Registered Dietitian who can review his chart and make specific recommendations for pancreatic cancer. Generally, persons with pancreatic cancer need to limit fat and moderate protein as your pancreas makes enzymes that are used in the digestion of these nutrients. It is very important that your dad snack frequently to maintain his weight especially if he is having radiation or chemotherapy.

43. Tamlin Cat: Feline Leukemia FAQ
A cat with leukemia needs to eat a very good diet high in fat. This is not thetime to be watching the cat's weight unless it's to watch for it to go up.
http://www.tamlincat.com/faq.html
If my cat has had the vaccination for FeLV, do I still need to worry?
Yes. The virus can often remain hidden. Kittens seem to be at the highest risk for harboring the virus. The virus might remain hidden for years, or it might never surface. In our case, we are certain that the litter of kittens we took in was infected from their mother. At this time, 3 of the kittens are now dead, one is still alive in our house and has tested negative. The last cat we have lost track of. If my cat tests negative, do I still need to have him tested each year?
Yes! See above. The virus can remain hidden for a varied amount of time. Before your cat receives the booster shot the vet needs to run the FeLV test. Our new vet has this as her policy. No cat receives the booster shot until they are tested.
Is there any treatment for cats infected with feline leukemia virus?
There is no cure at the present time, but some cats do live many years after infection has been diagnosed. Some preliminary work with AZT suggests that if treatment is started within two to three weeks of exposure, persistent infection can be prevented. Other treatments with some success include interferon, immune stimulants and acemannan (a derivative of aloe). Cats with solid tumors are more responsive to standard cancer therapies. Finally, antibiotics and other drugs are often used to treat infections and infestations that are secondary to the viral infection.
What about natural treatments?

Phytoestrogens
They can promote Cancer!
Do phytoestrogens prevent cancer? The evidence to support the industry claim is scant and recent work indicates that phytoestrogens may actually increase the risk of breast cancer. And HOT OFF THE PRESS are two articles that propose a link between bioflavonoids and soy and infantile leukemia.
(Read the British Food Standards Agencies Committee on Toxicity Report Here) Soy phytoestrogens causing cancer? Hold on a minute what about all the latest research that tells us that soy prevents cancer?! The key arguments in the case for soy as an anti-cancer foodstuff appear based on: Crude epidemiology. Mortality rates of certain types of hormone dependent cancers (such as breast and prostate) are lower in Asians. Asians eat lots of soy. Wow, if we eat lots of soy we will reduce our risk of cancer too! Evidence that the soy isoflavone genistein displays anti-cancer properties in vitro. Wow, genistein inhibits the growth of, and kills, cancer cells; let's eat more today! But long before these anti-cancer claims became common, researchers had noted that phytoestrogens such as genistein could greatly

Bioflavonoids may contribute to infant leukemia Bioflavonoids, the plant substances that have garnered huge interest for their potential health benefits, can cause breaks in DNA that could trigger the development of infant leukemias. Bioflavonoids are found at high levels in many foods including soybeans, fruits, root vegetables and herbs and are often taken in high concentrations as dietary supplements. Scientists from the University of Chicago Medical Centre found that 10 of the 20 bioflavonoids tested caused breaks in one small region of a gene known as MLL, a key player in about 80% of infant leukemias. "Although bioflavonoids may be beneficial in certain circumstances, our studies suggest that high dietary intake of bioflavonoids could cause DNA breaks in MLL and possibly in other partner genes", note the study authors. "Maternal ingestion of bioflavonoids may induce MLL breaks and potentially translocation in utero," they concede, "leading to infant and early childhood leukemias". Infant leukemias are rare, affecting only about 37 out of every million children in the U.S. Some researchers have argued that the cause may be an infectious agent, but epidemiologic studies have suggested that maternal consumption of foods such as bioflavonoids could lead to an increased risk of infant leukemia. A 1988 study found the disease to be nearly twice as common in several large Asian cities, where soy intake is two to five times as high in the U.S.

Feeding Kittens
What food
Choose a dry food intended specifically for kittens, avoiding generic foods and those that sell for unusually low prices. We suggest dry food as your kitten's main diet because it helps keep the teeth clean and healthy. Dry food is also easier to use than canned food and doesn't spoil when left in the bowl. Switch to adult cat food at about ten months of age. Adult food is lower in calories, so plump kittens should change a month or two sooner, thin kittens a little later.
Diet and urinary stones
Many cats have a tendency to develop little gritty sand-like bladder stones which cause pain and difficult urination. In males these stones can obstruct the urethra, quickly resulting in kidney failure and death. (See the section on FLUTD) Today, most commercial cat foods are formulated to minimize this problem. Stay with nationally recognized brands and you can be reasonably sure of getting good food.

Chinese Herbs for Leukemia
by Brian Benjamin Carter
I purchased some Shan Dou Gen for my father who has leukemia. He has exhausted all forms of conventional treatment and is willing to try a new approach at prolonging his life. Would it be harmful for him to take approximately 1 scoop in boiling water per day? I think this dose is approximately 1/2 gram. I saw some side effects listed on an internet web site, and do not want to cause him any more harm. I also purchased some Reishi Mushroom capsules for him to take. What is your opinion on his taking these two alternative forms of treatment?
Sincerely, CB
CB, Let me first say that if your father really wants to commit to a different treatment, you should get him to a licensed acupuncturist who is trained and qualified to treat with chinese herbs. Just buying some herbs one at a time without any education is not exactly appropriate to treating such a serious disease as leukemia. If it were a cold or something minor I wouldn't be so bold in saying this- but it's cancer... no one without professional training should take something like that on.

Children Exposed
Biomonitoring Can Provide a Baseline A 1993 report by the National Academy of Sciences suggested that pesticide safety thresholds should be lower for children than for adultsup to 10 times lowerdue to children's generally higher vulnerability to the effects of certain compounds. In a controversial response to this report, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that, as part of its implementation of the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA), which mandates evaluation of aggregate exposure to pesticides and cumulative health risk, it must reassess nearly 10,000 uses for hundreds of pesticides. The fruits of biomonitoring. Studies done on children who live near apple orchards where organophosphate pesticides were sprayed show that biomonitoring may be a useful tool for gauging children's exposures to pesticides. Among the first pesticides to be reassessed are the widely used organophosphate compounds. Gauging children's aggregate exposure to those pesticides and their cumulative risk is a tremendous task. In this issue, Richard Fenske and colleagues at Seattle's University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine tested biological monitoring as a means of meeting this challenge EHP . They found that such biomonitoring can indeed be useful in performing this task, and may also be helpful in setting baselines for regulatory use.

UC Berkeley public health school gets $4.5 million to study every child with leukemia in 35 California counties
By Patricia McBroom, Public Affairs
BERKELEYThe School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley, has received $4.5 million from the National Institutes of Health to expand its study of childhood leukemia - the most inclusive environmental analysis of this mysterious disease ever undertaken. The large grant will more than double the size of the study from 150 to 400 children and from the Bay Area to all of Central California, making it possible for the first time to evaluate this fatal blood cancer's many possible causes - pollution, diet, genes, infections and even electric/magnetic fields. In 90 percent of cases, the cause of leukemia in children remains unknown. "It's unusual to know so little about the cause of a disease," said Patricia Buffler, chief investigator for the study and former dean of UC Berkeley's School of Public Health. "But childhood leukemia is still relatively rare, and you need a large study population to detect low-level associations." The issue of chemical pollution is a powerful one for communities like Woburn, Massachusetts, where a polluted water supply was believed to have given several children leukemia. This true-life story is depicted in the current movie, "A Civil Action," starring John Travolta.
