The MontaVista operating system and cross development tools for embedded applications are based on Linux Version 2.4. This port facilitates manufacturers' development of set-top boxes and other new home gateway products to bring interactive television applications from service providers to consumers. This is another example of IBM's support for Linux and its ability to scale from enterprise servers to pervasive consumer devices. It also demonstrates the true scalability of PowerPC. Customers now have the opportunity to choose an architecture that can cover their entire product line and protect their software investment. In addition, common function across product lines can be easily leveraged to take advantage of rapidly evolving convergence opportunities and accelerate time to market. IBM's highly-integrated STB034xx chip family includes an MPEG-2 audio/video decoder, a memory interface subsystem and a range of peripheral interfaces all on a single piece of silicon (see Fig.1). Based on the PowerPC processor, it features high-speed operation at 162 MHz, with a 16-KB instruction cache and an 8-KB data cache, providing the performance necessary for a range of new services. The chips were introduced in 2000 and are currently in high-volume production.
