    Folktales
    Origins and Diffusion of Folktales
    Theories of Folktale Origin
No one theory listed below has been proved true; probably all of them have some points of validity. Monogenesis ("single origin") Theory:
    • The earliest theory; also called the "Indo-European Myth Theory" or "Aryan Myth Theory".
    • Belief that all folktales were descended from the myths of the Indo-Europeans or Aryans.
      • Indo-Europeans were supposedly ancestral to many races from India west through Europe.
      • Almost all European languages are descended from the Indo-European language; possibly many folktale elements have descended also.
      • Does not take into account similar folktales from other parts of the world.
      Polygenesis ("many origin") Theory:
      • Belief that people everywhere have the same experiences and thus develop the same stories.
      • People in all parts of the world are not alike.
      • Although stories might have originated in similar experiences, it is unlikely that they would be as similar in details as they have proved to be.
      Psychological explanations:
      • Freud believed that folktales arose from our unconscious needs and frustrations, which grew out of our childhood experiences.

    The Hard-Boiled Mystery Novels
    ... from Hammett to Ellroy
This page will serve as a center point for all these incredible writers and their works that the American Hard-Boiled genre of crime and mystery novels gave us all along this century. These writers were inspiration to many foreign writers, making Hard-Boiled novels one of the most important segments of the modern popular literature. Today, whodunits, cosies and tea-party mystery novels are the only mystery writings receiving some attention from the mass public, and it seems that Hard-Boiled novels are no more "fashionable", nor " socially correct" ! So, lame publishers, lukewarm public, and self-inflated intelligentsia are ignoring a lot of writers that are amongst the best of the American literature of the century, and their foreign descendance.
I think it is difficult to give a precise definition for this genre of literature as it will put unnecessary limits to the territory. However, some characteristics are practically always there:
    - central character: strongly individual, tough (against himself or/and the others), not necessarily an achiever

"There are no West Indian novelists, only short story writers in disguise; no West Indian novels, for they are extended fictions to which the term 'short story' cannot be applied. But if they are novels, they are novels with a difference." The West Indian Short Story Kenneth Ramchand
"I saw my mother, father, brother and sister fully for the first time when I was 12 years old, thanks to Mr. Fitzpatrick, my art teacher. He told my mother the whole story, and she blamed herself bitterly for the gap of my earlier life, especially as she imagined the danger I'd been in. When Mr. Fitzpatrick raised the alarm, he also managed to save his dwindling self-respect as an artist. There were 22 of us in his class and I always sat at the back. Mr. Fitzpatrick, who'd come over from Grenada to find this teaching job, would arrange some objects on his desk and tell us to draw them. While everyone else struggled to render faithfully the bowl of oranges and bananas, the neatly arranged mugs and jug, or the vase of hibiscus flowers, I always drew something different."
