Pig Production
Teagasc's research programme on pig production is carried out at Moorepark Research Centre . The programme includes studies on nutrition and feeding management; work designed to improve the quality of pigmeat; to improve sow productivity; protect the health and welfare of pigs and to develop management and nutritional strategies to minimise any adverse impact of intensive pig production on the environment.
RESEARCH EMPHASIS
The current pig production research programme involves an increased emphasis on animal welfare, food safety and environmental issues. Consumers and retailers are taking a greater interest in the conditions under which meat animals are reared, the impact of production practices on the environment and the feed ingredients which are used. There is a need for producers to address these issues and demonstrate their concern through adopting measures which will satisfy the consumer and ensure the commercial survival of their enterprises. Relevant new technologies e.g. use of feed enzymes such as phytase, need to have their effectiveness confirmed if producers are to be assured that these techniques can be adopted with confidence. The following are some recent research highlights: NUTRITION AND MANAGEMENT HEALTH AND WELFARE MEAT QUALITY
NUTRITION AND MANAGEMENT
  • Studies on the use of synthetic amino acids (tryptophan and methionine) in weaner pig feeds showed that newly weaned pigs which commonly have a poor appetite and low growth rates respond to higher dietary levels of tryptophan than are used at present. Wet feeding of newly weaned pigs has been promoted in the recent past as a means of stimulating feed intake, heath and growth rate. Our studies found inconsistent growth rate responses to wet feeding but with a consistently poorer efficiency of utilisation which is attributed to increased feed wastage.

Animal welfare standards: Introduction to Code of Practice for Welfare of Feral Livestock Animals - Destruction or capture, handling and marketing
Animal Welfare Unit, Animal and Plant Health Service, DPI
Introduction
Animal welfare is an important issue for the Australian livestock industry from both a production and marketing point of view. Maintaining a good reputation and demonstrating high standards for animal welfare will help ensure continued access to both our domestic and export markets. Agreed standards of welfare are available in national codes of practice.
What is the Code of Practice for Feral Livestock Animals?
The Australian Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals - Feral Livestock Animals (the Code) is a guide to promote agreed standards of animal welfare of feral livestock animals captured for domestication, abattoir slaughter or which may be destroyed in control programs. The Code has been developed in full consultation with animal industries, animal welfare groups and relevant state and federal Government bodies.

Increased Income and Community Welfare through Livestock Activities Project Profile
Farmers make up 70% of the population in the subdistirct of Tangjung Batu, in Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) district in South Sumatra. In 1982, a 24,000 ha government sugar cane plantation was opened in OKI district. four subdistricts, including 13 villages in Tangjung Batu, lost their traditional lands to this plantation. The villagers recieved low compnesation for their land, and without much farmland left, many of them had no other alterantvei except to work as day laborers in the plantation. This project will: Provide 33 families with either one head of cattle (17 families), one water buffalo (6 families), three goats (5 families), 20 ducks (5 families), 100 ducks (2 families), or 3000 fish fingerlings (4 families) each. Benefit an additional 90 families from animals passed-on by the original recipients. Increase income and nutrition in participating households. Adopt environmentally-sound practices such as composting and integrated pest management by participating households. Strengthen the capacity of at least six local community organizations in organizational skills and knowledge, such as values-based planning and management and financial sustainability.

Welcome to the Clemson University Livestock-Poultry Health Programs (LPH) Web Site.
The Livestock-Poultry Health Program of Clemson University is composed of three (3) areas of service; the Diagnostic Laboratory, Animal Health Programs, and the S. C. Meat and Poultry Inspection.
This organization has a major role in protecting the quality of life for humans, as well as companion and food animals. Constant surveillance for diseases that affect both man and other animals, providing the diagnostic expertise that allows for treatment and eradication of disease of domestic animals, and inspection and testing of processing of foods of animal origin are daily functions of LPH. Veterinary diagnostic support for wildlife also is provided by our diagnostic laboratory.
LPH has performed these tasks well for many years and is preparing for the future with a new facility and additional professional expertise to fulfill this mission.
Our mission will encompass an expanding role in food safety and emergency preparedness in the new millennium.
