Pests and Weeds — General Information
New Zealand's indigenous fauna and flora evolved in isolation, making them vulnerable to introduced species as their defence mechanisms are often ineffective. The effects of introduced animal pests and plant weed species have been profound, threatening large numbers of indigenous species. Introduced animals such as possums, goats and deer are eating indigenous vegetation, while weeds such as wild ginger and mist-flower are replacing it. Rats, stoats and other predators are destroying native fauna.
    The problems
    Weeds
New Zealand has about 2,700 native plant species, approximately 80% of them endemic. In contrast, over 20,000 species of plants have been introduced into New Zealand. Over 200 have become pests that can create major ecological problems in protected natural areas, and this number is growing every year. Ecological weeds can collectively invade every native vegetation type in New Zealand, from estuaries to alpine herbfields. Weed invasions threaten the long-term viability of many of New Zealand's native habitats, particularly lowland and coastal communities already stressed and fragmented by human development. Over 90% of New Zealand's wetlands have been lost and crack and grey willow are a major threat to those remaining. The 15% of New Zealand's original lowland forest that remains is highly fragmented and vulnerable to weed invasion. Even large, relatively undisturbed forests are being invaded by weeds such as old man's beard, wandering willie, mist-flower, wild ginger, climbing asparagus and periwinkle.

For some 60 million years, the life forms in Australia evolved in splendid isolation from the rest of the earth's landmasses. Set apart, surrounded by ocean, animal life developed bizarre attributes. Along with the egg-laying mammalian platypus to the gastric-brooding frogs, from the frilled lizards to jumping joeys, an amazing variety of lizards and snakes came to be. To this day, relatively little is known about Australia's wildlife, far less than we know about Africa's. Bearded dragons are agamid lizards belonging to the genus Pogona (formerly Amphibolurus , under which name they are found in books published up to just a couple of years ago). There are seven species (Sprackland 1994; six according to Fogle 1993) of which the most common in the pet trade is the P. vitticeps , the inland or central (also called the yellow-headed) bearded dragon is the most widely available. In smaller numbers, the common bearded ( P. barbata ) and the Rankin's ( P. henrylawsoni

If you have Python information to share, e-mail: web site editor Home: Pythons are found in Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Indonesian Islands Habitat: Most pythons are terestrial however, some are arboreal. Most pythons prefer drier habitats, although some species occur in tropical rain forest. General Description (Genus): Diet: Mostly mammals and birds; Some reptiles. Breeding: Pythons are egg layers. Some females brood their nests. Python vs Boa: Boas are ovoviviparous (Eggs inside females are surrounded by a membrane instead of a hard shell. They develope inside the female untill they hatch.) Pythons are oviparous (egg laying). In the Wild: Large Boas, Pythons, and Anacondas are all at least somewhat threatened due to habitat loss.
