What State Are You In?
Social Studies: Intermediate (Grades 3-5)
Objective
Students practice and review knowledge of major U.S. cities.
Materials
  • game cards cardstock of any color on which to print game cards paper and pencil for keeping score
Directions
This activity is great for helping students identify to which states major U.S. cities belong. None of the cities on the cards are state capitals, which provides an extra challenge for students. Copy the game cards on cardstock. You might want to decorate the back of the cards with a sticker such as a flag or another symbol. If possible, laminate the cards, then cut them out. Before students begin playing the game, use a map to review well-known cities in different states. See how many cities students can think of. Find each city on the map and point it out to students. Game Rules: Shuffle the cards and place them face down. Turn the first card up and show it or read it to students. If a student knows the state in which the city is found, he or she can raise his or her hand to answer the question. Check the answer key for the correct answer and score as follows: Correct answer-Win 2 points, card goes to discard pile. Incorrect answer-Lose 2 points, card goes to bottom of pile.

Relationships between policy and power, community decision-making and environmental change are the focus of this research program. As a leader in the theoretical development of political ecology, BARA focuses on how power relationships between stakeholder groups determine access to environmental and natural resources and how those resources are to be used. From this theoretical perspective, BARA has carried out numerous environmental impact assessments, both in the U.S. and internationally. With funding from diverse federal and state sources, these projects study the environmental and social consequences of public and private interventions on local, often ethnically-diverse communities. BARA researchers within this program also are active in the environmental justice component legislated in environmental impact statements. The BARA approach to environmental justice builds on a participatory philosophy and on principles of disputes mediation to facilitate the equitable distribution of environmental impacts among different stakeholders. Fewer women are smoking during pregnancy or going without needed prenatal care, although more babies are being born underweight, preterm or to unmarried mothers, two recent reports on U.S. births found. The reports, "The Right Start City Trends" and "The Right Start State Trends," were released in February by Child Trends and Kids Count at the Annie E. Casey Foundation . The reports used 1998 data from the National Center for Health Statistics to examine birth rates at the national level and in the 50 largest cities, comparing them to 1990 findings. "We have found that making data easily available in a style that facilitates comparisons across cities and states often stimulates discussions along community and state leaders regarding programs and policies to improve child well-being," said William O'Hare, PhD, coordinator of Kids Count.

Field Studies in Louisiana
Day 1: Monday, March 17, 1997
On this day, eleven geography majors and their professor left Conway, Arkansas, to spend four nights and five days in Louisiana. In preparation for that field experience, students were required to read the following: "The Structure of Modern Field Research, " "The Lower Mississippi Valley," "The Atchafalaya Basin," "Bayou LaFourche," "Wetland Loss in Louisiana," "Impact of the March Buggy on the Wetlands," "The Social and Symbolic Uses of Ethnic/Regional Foodways: Cajuns and Crawfish in Southern Louisiana," "The Commercial Crawfish Industry of South Louisiana," "Louisiana Toponymic Generics Delimit Culture Areas," "Evangeline," and "Scattered to the Wind: Dispersal and Wanderings of the Acadians, 1755-1809." With this reading reviewed in pre-trip classroom discussions, students were prepared for the non-classroom field experience in Louisiana Monday was primarily a travel day. The trip from Conway to Lafayette, Louisiana, took approximately eight hours. Our path took us south on U.S. Highway 65 through the southeastern Arkansas cities of Pine Bluff, Lake Village, and Eudora, to Ferriday, Louisiana, where we took U.S. Highway 84 to Alexandria, Louisiana. Between Ferriday and Alexandria, there was a distinct change in topography as we passed through large areas of flat, flooded wetlands. We also noted a change in the cultural landscape as we entered the Cajun/Catholic area of deep southern Louisiana.
