SOUTH LOUISIANA
“BEING FROM A CITY, MY EXPERIENCE IN SOUTH LOUISIANA HAS EXPANDED MY IDEAS ABOUT WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IN THIS COUNTRY. I THINK COMING HERE IS THE BEST THING I COULD HAVE DONE. I LOVE IT HERE. I LOVE THE FACT THAT I KNOW WHERE MY STUDENTS LIVE AND THAT I CAN BE AN ACTIVE PART OF THEIR LIVES OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM. I CAN REACH INTO THE COMMUNITY FOR RESOURCES WHEN I NEED TO. I LIVE 5 MINUTES FROM MY SCHOOL. THAT'S REALLY HELPED ME BE A BETTER TEACHER.”

"MY ROOMMATE AND I BOUGHT A BOAT TO GO OUT ON THE BAYOU. THERE’S A WILDLIFE REFUGE BEHIND OUR TOWN, AND YOU CAN GLIDE IN ON THE BOAT AND SEE EVERY IMAGINABLE LIVING THING. I’VE NEVER GONE AND NOT SEEN AN ALLIGATOR!" - Ramsey Green, 2001 corps member LIFE
Zydeco and Cajun dancing; canoeing in the bayous; the blues at Phil Brady’s; tailgating and football. The unique cultures of South Louisiana have thrived, to a large degree, because of the region ’s geographic isolation.

LOUISIANA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION, et al. Appellees - Appellants Appeal from the District Court of the United States for the Eastern District of Louisiana BRIEF IN BEHALF OF ST. AUGUSTINE HIGH SCHOOL, ET AL., APPELLANTS - APPELLEES John P. Nelson, Jr. 344 Camp Street, 11th Floor New Orleans, Louisiana Dec. 1967 SEGREGATED ATHLETICS IN LOUISIANA OR THE TWO PLATOON SYSTEM The state of Louisiana officially recognizes two athletic associations, namely, the LIALO, which is allowed by the State to direct, control and supervise interscholastic athletic activities among negro schools, and the LHSAA, its counterpart, who performs a similar function, as outlined above, for the white schools. (Tr. pp. 263, 264). At the time St. Augustine applied for membership in the LHSSA41 , in June of 1964, the white and negro public senior high schools were completely segregated.42 This situation had not changed when the LHSAA refused to consider St. Augustine's application during the February 1965 general assembly meeting. This was St. Augustine's first time at bat - before one pitch was thrown, the game was called off. In February 1966, when St. Augustine's application was presented for a vote at a general meeting of the LHSAA, there were only twelve negroes in the State's white senior high school system. (Tr. p. 94). In addition, the white senior high schools in Jefferson Parish desegregated in September 1965, but the number of negroes who attended, initially, is not known. (Tr. p. 240).

Surgeon General David Satcher recently praised a new EDC book for providing American schools with a blueprint to put children’s health and well-being at the center of all education decisions. Schools that coordinate their resources to protect the health of children will "reap great financial, academic, and health rewards," he said. Health Is Academic: A Guide to Coordinated School Health Programs

PREVENTION OF PROBLEM GAMBLING
MAY 2001, Volume IV, Issue 5 *A Monthly Newsletter on Problem Gambling Prevention Information, Research, and Initiatives* "No progress has ever been made against an epidemic by treating only the casualties." Math Curriculum to be Piloted in Louisiana A middle school curriculum entitled, "Facing the Odds: The Mathematics of Gambling" will soon be piloted in six middle schools in Louisiana with the ultimate goal of having it offered as part of the curriculum in all junior high schools in Louisiana. The math program will meet the need created when, in 1999, the Louisiana legislature passed a bill (R.S.27:401) which required education about problem gambling for students in Louisiana schools. The curriculum was a joint project of the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling and the Harvard Medical School. It was authored by Howard J. Shaffer, Ph.D., along with Matthew Hall and Joni Vander Bilt, M.P.H. of Harvard Medical School's Division of Addiction. It seeks to both improve math skills as well as educate students as to the potential for gambling related problems. Leaders in Louisiana chose this curriculum over others that it investigated because it met National Council of Teachers of Math standards and could address the issue without placing additional burdens on teachers and school districts.
