INTRODUCTION
Background: Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Macau was the first European settlement in the Far East. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and Portugal on 13 April 1987, Macau became the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 20 December 1999. China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be practiced in Macau and that Macau will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs.

Macau is situated southeast of China, on the western bank of the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province. It lies 70 kilometers southwest of Hong Kong and 145 kilometers FROM Guangzhou. Topography
Macau has a total area of approximately 21 square kilometers, consisting of a narrow peninsula of Macau, which is linked to the People's Republic of China at Portas do Cerco ("Border Gate"). The territory is also connected to the island of Taipa by two bridges, the old bridge "Governor Nobre de Carvalho" (2.6km) and the new bridge "Amizade" (4.4km), which in turn is joined to the island of Coloane by a 2.1km causeway. Climate
The weather in the territory is moderately hot, with an average annual temperature of just over 20 C and a yearly mean variation between 6 to 25 C with high humidity in summer (April - September). Humidity percentages range FROM 73 to 90%. Do expect an occasional short period of heavy rains and sporadic tropical storms.
A good time to go to Macau would be during the autumn season, which is FROM October to December, when days are sunny and warm and the humidity low. Winter is FROM January to March and it can get cold, but one can expect to have some periods of clear skies as well.

http://www.macau99.org.mo/tdmrtp/varios/geography_e.htm
Geography and Population Macau is located in Southeast China, on the western edge of the delta formed by the Pearl River (Zhujiang) , bordering the Chinese province of Guangdong. It is 60 km from Hong Kong and 145 km from Guangzhou (Canton). Local time is eight hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Area: The enclave covers a total area of 23,6 square kilometres which includes the Macau peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Coloane. Macau is connected to mainland China by a narrow isthmus. Two bridges connect the island of Taipa to the peninsula. The island of Coloane is reached from Taipa by way of a two-kilometre causeway, the western side of which is now an extensive land embankment. The total area of the enclave has been progressively enlarged through land reclamation along all waterfronts. Macau, except in very special cases involving matters of security, is open to one and all, which thus explains its highly diverse population. At 51.9% of the total population, women continue to overnumber men. Divided according to age group, 24.9% of the population is between the ages of 14 and younger, 67.5% falls between the ages of 15-64, and 7.6% is 65 and over.

Treasures and Images of Macau Former Portuguese Colony Returned to China BY JUDY S. LU On Dec. 20, 1999, Macau was returned to China after 442 years of Portuguese rule. To mark the occasion, the Library's Federal Research Division Chief Robert Worden, and this writer discussed the Library's resources on the history of Macau, the first Asian seaport opened to the West. Located at the mouth of the Zhu Jiang (Pearl River), about 40 miles southwest of Hong Kong, Macau consists of a peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Coloane. A mix of Eastern and Western cultures is reflected in Macau's architecture, life-styles and traditions. In 1152, Macau (Sung Dynasty), was under the jurisdiction of Hsiang-shan (Fragrant Mountain). In the early part of the 16th century, when the Portuguese took control of the Asian- European trade, Macau was an integral part of Portugal's seafaring explorations. In 1557 the Portuguese established a permanent settlement there and paid taxes and leased the land from China. Macau became a Portuguese territory in 1845, following the Opium War.
