The accident of time was 1966-67. The accident of geography was Macau. The cosmic historical events were the Cultural Revolution in Communist China and student uprisings in Macau . The "accident" began in the Gloucester Bar in Hong Kong when cosmic coincidences brought Marya Glyn-Daniel into conjunction with Geoffrey Powell when she was in desperate need of a job and he was in need of an assistant in Macau. In the 1960s the author was young and inexperienced in skills and geography. She accepted the job, but where Macau was and what it was she did not know.
"It's a Portuguese colony, or overseas province to be exact, about forty miles south of Hong Kong, along the China coast. Has been for four hundred years." (p. 18)
