The Scarlet Macaw is arguably the most magnificent bird of the parrot family. With their wide strong wings, macaws can reach speeds of 35 miles per hour. They often fly in pairs or small groups and often call to each other in raucous hoarse voices. Macaws appear to prefer higher elevations and riparian (riverine) forests. They are known to have very large territories. They prefer to nest in holes high up in trees and lay one or two eggs. They feed on specific fruits such as polewood, roaming large areas searching for clumps of their favorite foods. As recent as 1989, the reported Belizean population of Scarlet Macaws was a total of 24 birds. But in 1996, a new population of over 100 birds was "discovered" south of the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Unfortunately, over most of its range, the Scarlet macaw is endangered, a victim of human greed - many have been taken as a commodity in the pet trade. KEY FACTS SIZE

Welcome to My Web Site! I'm Tina Usher, and I have been breeding exotic birds for the last 21 years. I have always been captivated by all types of birds, probably since the day my Dad came home and gifted me with a little yellow parakeet which we named Buttercup. From there I progressed to cockatiels, and then on to the larger parrots. Since I seemed to have a gift with birds, I thought I'd try my hand at breeding. Most people start small, breeding parakeets or cockatiels and then graduate to the larger species. Not me, I jumped right in with a pair of Congo African Greys! They are my personal favorite because of their intelligence and great talking ability. With beginner's luck they bred within a few weeks for me! From there I researched information on Macaws and Cockatoos, and decided to try breeding them. Since parrots are very difficult to breed in captivity, the others did take years to reproduce, but my patience and perseverance paid off. I currently successfully breed Congo African Greys, Medium Sulphur Crested Cockatoos, Umbrella Cockatoos, Moluccan Cockatoos, and Green Wing Macaws.

MACAWS
Notable birds for its coloration and behavior, the Macaws attract to all with its affection. Together with the Parrots, are considered the most intelligent birds of the world. They can live up to 70 years old. In Brazil, they can be found in Amazon, Northeast and Center-West regions (Planalto Central).
Unhappily the illegal traffic of wild animals and the deforestation have decimated entire populations of these colorful birds. Innumerable species currently are threatened of extinguishing between them the Blue Macaw ( Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus ) and the Golden Parakeet ( Aratinga guarouba ). Some already are considered extinct as the Glaucous Macaw ( Anodorhynchus glaucus ) or the practically extinct ones the Spix's Macaw ( Cyanopsitta spixii ) and the Lear's Macaw ( Anodorhynchus leari ). Happily many organizations and institutions are working hard for the preservation and perpetuation of these gorgeous birds. The Blue and Gold Macaw (
