    Geography
Greece, officially known as the Hellenic Republic, lies at the southeastern tip of Europe. To the north, it borders with Albania, the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Bulgaria and to the east with Turkey. The area of the country is 131,957 sq. km and it consists of a peninsula and over 2000 islands. Though a relatively small country, Greece boasts an astonishing variety of landscapes —from the legendary mountains of Olympus, Pindos and Parnassos to miles of pristine coastline. Indeed, due to the large number of islands, Greece has a particularly long coastline (15,021 km.), which is the most extensive among all the Mediterranean countries. The climate is mostly dry and temperate, though it snows on the mountains and in the north. The climate of Northern Macedonia and northern Epiros is similar to the one of the Balkans, with freezing winters and very hot, humid summers, while the Attica region, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Crete and the Central and Eastern Peloponnese have a rather typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Greece is divided into the following geographical regions: • The Attica region (Athens)
    • Sterea Hellas (excluding the capital area)
In this region, at the heart of Greece, lies Delphi, which was the oracle of Antiquity. Running through central Greece is the rugged Pindos mountain range, with a peak of 2,637 m (Mt Smolikas).

    GEOGRAPHY
Much of Macedonia is a plateau between 600m and 900m (1970ft and 2950ft) high. The Vardar River cuts across the middle of the country, passing the capital, Skopje, on its way to the Aegean Sea near Thessaloniki, Greece. Lakes Ohrid and Prespa in the south-west drain into the Adriatic via Albania. These lakes are among the largest on the Balkan Peninsula, and Lake Ohrid is the deepest. In the north-west, the Sar Planina marks Macedonia's border with Kosovo; Titov vrh (2750m/9010ft) in this range is Macedonia's highest peak. The country's three national parks are Pelister (west of Bitola), Galicica (between Lakes Ohrid and Prespa) and Mavrovo (between Ohrid and Tetovo). Macedonia's summers are hot and dry. In winter, warm Aegean winds blowing up the Vardar Valley moderate the continental conditions prevailing farther north. However, Macedonia receives a lot of snowfall between November and February, even if temperatures are warmer than those farther north. AED AWARDS 87 NSEP GRADUATE INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS (Washington, D.C., August 7, 2000) The Academy for Educational Development (AED) today announced the 87 recipients of the 2000 National Security Education Program Graduate International Fellowships. NSEP provides a unique opportunity for students enrolled in graduate degree programs at U.S. institutions of higher education to enhance their understanding of geographic areas and countries whose languages and cultures are critical to our national security but are less frequently studied by American graduate students. Almost 300 students applied for the fellowships. Those selected come from 50 colleges and universities throughout the United States. Twenty-one schools have multiple fellowship awardees, with six Fellows selected from the University of Texas at Austin, five from the University of California at Berkeley and five from the University of California at Los Angeles. This year's recipients are going to 40 countries and studying more than 30 languages.
