Read the newest Article from Texas, which recommend to say NO to Greek Racist Resolution: new Texas Observer 2/28/2003- Bad Bills: Historians write about whether the ancient Macedonians were Hellenic. According to Loring Danforth "The evidence says no." Seems that the consensus among scholars is the exact opposite of what is stated in Bonnen’s resolution. " Behind it all is an attempt to deny a group of people the right to identify themselves as they wish." Apparently, the dispute is not just between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia. A minority of non-Greek Slavs within Northern Greece also identify themselves as Macedonian and have suffered human rights abuses for their refusal to assimilate into Greek culture. So not only does HR 107 contain highly questionable facts, its lousy foreign policy. In Prof. Danforth’s words: "It’s a bad bill because it is bad history, bad diplomacy, and bad human rights!" ... Macedonia in Antiquity
Historical evidence and anchaeological finds point to the existence of Greek-speaking inhabitants of the North Pindus mountains in the period 2200-2100B.C. These Protohellenic tribes are thought to have broken away from the main bulk of the family of Indo-European peoples in the course of the 5th millenium B.C. and to have spread throughout the area known today as Northern Greece. In the early centuries of the second millenium B.C. three basic groups of Greek-speaking peoples can be distinguished:
  • The South-Eastern group (in the NW part of Thessaly), whose principal representatives were the Ionians.
  • The Eastern group (W.Macedonia), with two dialect subgroups, the Arcadian and tha Aeolian, and
  • The Western group, of which the tribe of the Makednoi was the most populous. At about this time, these Protohellenic tribes, led by the Ionians, began a slow advance southwards. Here they came into contact with the Prehellenic populations of Crete and the islands, who had reached a high cultural level. The Ionians were followed south by the Eastern group of peoples, those who used the Aeolian dialect. It was from these populations, which included the Achaeans, the Lapiths, the Minyans and others, that Mycenean civilisation was to spring. The Western group, and the Makednoi first and the Makednoi firsti and foremost, split. One group pushed into Central Greece and the Peloponnese. Another established itself in Doris, where it mixed with the local populations and eventually acquierd the name "Dorians". A third group made its way to Thessaly, while a fourth -the Macedonians- spread out through the regions which today are called Western,Southern and Central Macedonia. This group, Greek-speaking like the others, did not move south , and for some centuries remained outside the rapid cultural development of its related peoples, who had come into contact with the highly-developed Creto-insular populations of the south.

  • Modern times Occupying the bigger part of northern Greece, Macedonia first appears on the historical scene as a geographical-political unit in the 5th century BC, when it extended from the upper waters of the Haliakmon and Mount Olympus to the river Strymon. In the following century it reached the banks of the Nestos. The history of the Macedonians, however, may be said to commence somewhere around the beginning of the 7th century BC; at this time the Greek tribe of the Makedones, whose home was in Orestis, began to expand, driving out the Thracians and contending with the Illyrians, and gradually occupied Eordaia, Bottiaia, Pieria and Almopia, finally settling in the region called by Thucydides "Lower Macedonia, or Macedonia by the Sea".
    Prehistoric period
This region of high mountains, large rivers, lakes and fertile plains makes its appearance on the stage of civilization as early as the Early Neolithic Period (Nea Nikomedeia, region of Yanitsa). The density of the settlements, however, shows a vertical increase at the end of the 5th millennium BC (Late Middle Neolithic) and attests, throughout the whole of the region though especially in central and east Macedonia, to significant mobility on the part of the population and to its characteristic dynamism. These same settlements prospered until the Early Bronze Age - that is, until the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC -most of them organized in the plains, with houses either square or rectangular in plan, sometimes with wooden posts and sometimes with stone foundations for the walls.

    Macedonian History
The people of Macedonia share a rich cultural heritage. The region has been the subject of many conflicts in the past. Some of you may have emmigrated to other parts of the world, some may have parents or grandparents who left to make their way in other lands. A few of you have stayed to make your life in your homeland, regardless of the difficult times.
Each of us has his or her own personal history to share. We invite you to send us your story. We will gladly welcome your e-mail, or if you prefer, audio tapes telling the story of your family. We will make this information available so that everyone can share their experiences and memories.
We realize that few things can spark such passionate feelings as the memories of our family and our homeland, but we ask that everyone try to focus on the accomplishments and character of their ancestors, and avoid turning this into a debate over the politics and geography of the current governments. Many things have shaped the past and future of Macedonia, and there are a number of more appropriate forums for discussion on these topics.
No one who knows anything of the past can be free of opinions on these subjects, but we prefer to acknowledge and celebrate the

Country Info Macedonia Introduction Macedonia General Data Macedonia Maps Macedonia Culture ... Macedonia Time and Date Macedonia ( Yugoslav Republic ) History Back to Top Roman Empire was divided in the 4th century AD into eastern and western halves, Macedonia became part of the eastern half, which became the Byzantine Empire. By this time the population of Macedonia had been largely Christianized. Macedonia's Greek ethnic composition was overturned by the invasion of Slavic peoples into the Balkans in the 6th and 7th centuries AD. Most of the region subsequently fell under the sway of the first Bulgarian empire in the 9th century. The Bulgarians were Christianized during this period by disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius, whose adaptation of Greek characters to a Slavonic dialect spoken in southern Macedonia eventually became the Cyrillic alphabet. For the rest of the Middle Ages parts of the region were variously ruled by the Byzantine Empire, the second Bulgarian empire, and the Serbian empire. The groundwork was thus laid for the conflicting national claims to Macedonia that emerged in the modern era. The Greek blockade was not lifted until September 1995, when the foreign ministers of Greece and the FYROM signed an interim accord on mutual relations. The two countries confirmed their border and agreed to establish diplomatic relations. Greece pledged to lift its embargo and to consent to the FYROM’s entrance into a number of international organizations. For its part, the FYROM agreed to remove the controversial Star of Vergina from its flag and to repeal articles of its constitution that Greece found objectionable. Negotiations were to continue regarding the issue of the republic’s name.
