Please contact Humanities Computing at 702-6085 or humanities-computing@uchicago.edu for assistance. There are three steps to securing your computer. You can skip ahead to the step you prefer or follow them in order.
    Secure Email
First we will secure your email program. Humanities Computing recommends that you use Eudora 5.1 for your email client, and the directions below are about securing that program.

    Upgrading the Macintosh Operating System
    Should You Upgrade?
Upgrading your Macintosh operating system (OS) software usually provides more features, better system performance, and an easier-to-use interface. It can, however, be a time-consuming process and is not guaranteed to increase your computing productivity and efficiency; especially if what you really need is a new computer. These guidelines will help you decide if it is time to install a new OS on your Mac: You should upgrade your Macintosh operating system if:
    • You want to use software applications that require newer operating system software.
    • You want to reinstall your system because you are experiencing frequent crashes/problems with your Mac. In this case, you might want to consider upgrading at the same time.
    • Your department or organization has decided to standardize on a specific operating system version to simplify consulting efforts and troubleshooting.
You should not upgrade your Macintosh operating system if:
    • You are not having any problemsyour system and applications run fine.

    Macintosh Operating System
This handout will introduce you to the Macintosh OS X Operating System and the basic skills that you will need to use it for programming. At the beginning of the course, when we are just starting to learn programming, practice these skills repeatedly, until they become intuitive. Because there are just a few skills, and because you will use these same skills over and over again while taking this course, you will soon master them. Every semester about 500 students successfully complete this process. Please feel free to ask other students if you get stuck; and, if someone gets stuck and asks you a question, please try to help them. Mastering the use of the operating system is NOT an academic part of the course, so feel free to give and take help. OS X (operating system ten) Mac OS X is the newest in a long line of Graphical User Interface (GUI) operating systems, first started in 1984 (when the Apple Macintosh was introduced). The Macintosh and its operating system were based on the work done at Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Complex), but not commercialized by Xerox. The OS X is the first to be fully UNIX compatible. Mac OS X Terminology Here are a few important terms that you must know to be able to understand the rest of the information on this page.
