It's kind of like the difference between English and French: They get the same thing done but in very different ways. For one, the two systems run on different hardware. Also, software designed for one system will not run on the other without an emulator program like SoftWindows or VirtualPC, and even then performance suffers. But let's start with the most basic information: An operating system is the first, underlying program that runs on a computer. It tells the computer how to read disks, write files, communicate with other pieces of hardware, and communicate with the user. Other programs, like word processors and spreadsheets, run on top of the operating system. Generally speaking, operating systems are specific to the hardware they run on. The Macintosh OS only runs on Macintosh computers made by Apple. (Apple briefly licensed other manufacturers to use the Mac OS Motorola, Power Computing, and others but killed the licensing agreements when Steve Jobs returned as acting CEO of the company.) The Windows OS only runs on computers specifically designed to run Windows software, which are known as PCs or PC compatibles; these are made by many manufacturers. They all have a certain kind of processor, based on a certain instruction set, called the x86.

They all have a certain kind of processor, based on a certain instruction set, called the x86. Aesthetically, the difference between the two is not great. Both use a GUI, or graphical user interface. That means they have menus that drop down, windows that open and contain programs and documents, the ability to run multiple programs at the same time, and a standard user interface for the programs they run, which makes it easy for a user to move from program to program.

Operating System Options Introduction To Operating Sytems A Brief History Of PC Operating Systems Introduction To Windows Windows Millenium Edition ... Linux Overview
Introduction to Operating Sytems In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy hopes the all-powerful wizard will grant her wish to go home. But when she looks behind the curtain it's revealed that the wizard is a clever yet ordinary man whose magical powers are no greater than her own. Today's PCs have the ability to make a lot of our computing wishes come true. The fact that one machine can do everything from playing arcade quality games to creating music CD's, is a testament to the accomplishments of modern computing. Unfortunately every crash, incompatible driver and bug fix reminds us that PCs and their operating systems are far from magical. The operating system (OS) is the most important program that runs on a computer. It performs basic tasks like recognizing input from the keyboard, sending images to the display, keeping track of files, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.

Computers are run by operating systems, which are computer programs organizing and utilizing the computer's processing functions. An operating system lines up the jobs, and assigns them to their proper places. It tells the CPU to perform various functions, and checks the data moving through the various devices of the computer. Later, when multitasking became possible, several operators could use the system to perform jobs at the same time. There are many operating systems for a computer user to choose from, the most popular include Microsoft's MS-DOS and Windows, the UNIX system from Bell, and Apple's Macintosh. Below are links to information about the Macintosh operating system and related resources.

Windows Desktop Built-In Formatting a Disk Saving ... Keyboard Managing Windows Ooey Gooey !" Did you ever say that as a child? Well right now you are taking advantage of a GUI (pronounced gooey). The browser window, and all of the other windows you open on your computer, are part of the Graphical User Interface that has made computers so accessible to a huge number of users. Learning how to manage these windows will help you use your computer with less frustration. Components of a window - This image is clickable. To learn more about one of the identified regions, put your mouse cursor over the region. When you see your cursor change to a finger, gently click one time with the mouse button. Title Bar - This title bar contains the title of the document you are currently working on or viewing. In the example above the name of the document is Document1. That means it has not yet been saved. The title bar is also the move bar. To move a window, place your mouse pointer in the title bar, click with the left mouse button, hold the button down and move the mouse. The window moves to a new place on the screen.
  • Active or Inactive windows - The title bar also indicates which window is active. Yes, you can have more than one window open on your screen. That is why you bought so much memory! However, even if you have 20 windows open, only one window will be active.

Learning to "Drive" a
Macintosh Computer Since PCs (IBM-style personal computers) are more numerous than Macs, my guess is that few students in this class are familiar with the Mac OS (operating system). Don’t worry. First of all, Macs and PCs perform the same functions, so their controls aren’t all that different. Second, we’ll take a whole class period to practice with the Macs so that you’ll learn your way around them. (If you already know how to "drive" a Mac, maybe you’ll be able to share your expertise with the person sitting next to you.) You MUST print out the tutorial and bring it with you to class.
Do NOT plan to print the tutorial in Taylor 131 before or during class Macintosh Operating System Tutorial If you want to practice with the Mac OS some more after our class session, you will find Macs available for student use:
